Well we are almost two complete months into the 2011/2012 school year.  It's hard to believe this much time has gone by.  To be honest I feel like I've known my students for months and months.  The connection and community we have in 6C is awesome and I feel blessed to be teaching such an enthusiastic great bunch!  They all have so much spark and zest for learning.  I know after all our community has been through that the roads are a little bumpy and the journey still has many twists and turns but together I know we will be supportive and strong.  I know the students have been through a lot and I know on the outside appear completely happy but through discussions and writing I'm fully appreciative that they are still going through some pain and healing; as much if not more than the adults.  They are candid, honest and very open to share their feelings, concerns and their optimism.

We will be focusing on a theme of community and global citizenship this year along with embracing the joy and fun learning can be.  I knew from the first week that this year was going to be blessed with amazing accomplishments both academically and socially.  I continue to know that we will have a great year and hopefully the students have a wonderful end to their Elementary Education.

Thank you to the parents for their support and involvement.  I will definitely be in touch with parents who are willing to volunteer in the classroom.  I have the parent surveys and will be emailing parents before the end of the month to discuss things they would like to help with.

Please write me anytime through the email link to the left or drop by for a visit.  I want to be aware of your concerns and questions.  Please watch this webpage and the students' agendas for communication and information.

Welcome back to students and their families.
I want to welcome everyone back to a new school year.  This has been a year of many changes and I know there are still many changes to come for some families and our community as a whole.  I am confident with a great team approach of Student/Teacher/Parents/Community that our school year will be an awesome one.  I know too it will be a year of healing for a lot of us but together I know we will have a wonderful year of learning, fun and support.  Please use this webpage for communication.  I will be showing the students how to best make use of this site and they will be responsible for sharing and showing with their families provided they have access to a computer.  I will run off hard copies of important information too for those who do not have computer or internet access.

I look forward to meeting every child who comes through my door in a few days as well as Parents/Guardians.

Enjoy your last few days of summer !

It is really hard to believe that Spring break is here especially with all the snow on the ground still.  We are going to have a messy meltdown I believe but I'm looking forward to Spring and Summer as I'm sure all my students are.

Spring break often involves a holiday or just some time off at home to relax, be with family and friends and just forget about school for a little while.
I am heading to California with my family and going to go to Disneyland and Universal Studios and hopefully the beach for a day of photography.

I hope all my students really have a great break from school and come back refreshed and ready to work hard for the last three months of not only grade six but elementary school.
The time will fly so quickly and it will be hard to believe another year will end (always a very sad time for me as I really dislike goodbyes and I know how much I will miss my students this year)

    So enjoy SPRING BREAK everyone!

    Mrs. Z.

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
I am sitting here wondering how best to wish everyone in my class and their families a really Happy Holiday.  We take time off from school and work to celebrate the Christmas Season and the coming of the New Year.  It means so many different things to so many different people.  Because we are a diverse group of people coming from different cultures and religions it is hard to know exactly how express the joy I hope everyone experiences over the next couple of weeks with friends and family.
I found this site online that was a really touching story of the True Meaning of Christmas.  I thought I would leave the link for anyone who would like to read it at home over the holidays.  It is something better shared at home than at school so that family can share.

It has been a wonderful first four months of school this year and the students in 6C have shown amazing growth in all areas of education but also as global citizens.  I have seen students blossom with excitement in projects, group work, discussions, assignments and overall character.  There is wonderful potential in this classroom in each and every student and I look forward to continuing our journey in Grade Six in the New year.  Thank you to all the parents/guardians for your support, generosity and kindness.
I wish all my super students and their families a wonderful, relaxing, happy holiday season.

    See you Next Year !!!!

I wanted to do a blog on the Citizenship growth I have seen in our room so far this year and how very proud I am of all the students.  Since September through Language Arts and Social Studies we have learned the value and importance of being a global citizen and how everyone, no matter their age, can make a difference.
Some of what we have done so far this year as a 6C community are:
** Art with the Seniors (a project to contribute to a piece of Art work for our Town Hall)
** Visit to the Long Term Care Facility to visit and show off costumes at Halloween
** Sent Christmas Cards and Tim Horton's Gift cards to the soldiers in Afghanistan
** Made donations to the food bank both at Thanksgiving and now at Christmas
** Donations of coins to our Christmas Coins for Change
** Brought in gifts for Santa's Anonymous which was donated to Santa's Sleigh through Lake FM and will be delivered Monday, Dec. 13th
** We have been learning about other countries and issues around that world that suffer and our in need.  Students have learned a lot about Child Labour and all about the "ME to WE" campaign.
More projects are up and coming both locally and internationally and students in 6C will continue to be educated on global issues and how they each can make a difference.  We will start "Making a Difference" log books where students will see first hand all the good deeds they do every day and the difference they make in their families, school, community, world.
Congratulations so far on all the great Global Citizen accomplishments you have made.
    I am very proud!
Please share this blog with your parents and allow them to comment if they wish.

Well the snow is upon us and the cold weather is coming.  Winter is a long season but it has it's many joys within it.
I love fresh fallen snow in the morning as the sun rises.  I love to build snowmen and then come in for a fire and hot chocolate.  Christmas is in Winter which is my favourite time of the year!
Even though it can be cold there are many sports to play throughout the season. My favourite part about winter is heading to Jasper or Banff and seeing the snow capped mountains of beauty.

You know I firmly believe that having a positive attitude and a sense of humour are great ways to get through each day not allowing the little things to bug you.  However, there are obvious things in life that bug us, some more than others.  There are little things day to day that bother us and bigger things in life that bother us.  I am totally bothered by people not valuing and wanting an education and passing that attitude onto others around them. Negativity and constant complaining is another thing that bugs me.  I know all people complain to some extent but to constantly be complaining only stresses everyone out.
With school and my students the things that bug me the most are :  attendance problems, a lack of caring and most of all students who don't make the effort to be responsible for their time, work and homework.  In life I think what bugs me the most is the alarming number of problems in the world that are not being recognized, the amount of crime and disrespect towards the human race and selfish spoiled societies we are creating.  There are many things that are great in life and that is another whole blog!  What bothers you?  Feel free to ask your parents to contribute to this blog too if they have time.

    Thanksgiving and being thankful
We've learned that the history of thanksgiving was centered around being thankful for the success of the harvests in fall time.  We know it even went as far back to the time of the explorer Martin Frobisher and the celebration of his journey.
So this Thanksgiving weekend it is a great time to spend with family and friends and share all that we are thankful for.  I am especially thankful for the health and well being of all my family immediate and extended.  I am also thankful for living in a great democratic country like Canada.  What are you thankful for?  What are you doing this Thanksgiving weekend?

    It's Simple
Love yesterday for all that it was
Not for how it was supposed to be
Love today for what it is
Not for how you think it should be.
Love tomorrow for all it may be
Not for how you think it should be.
    It's simple
    Just Love!

    STUDENT EDUCATIONAL BLOGGING:
In the near future I'm looking to have students have their own blog pages online in a secure fashion for educational purposes.  Below are some definitions and information on educational blogging for both students and parents.
What are your opinions of blogging?  I am hoping students will expand how much they write when they get set up.  One line social texting is not what I'm looking for.

    DEFINITIONS AND INFORMATION
Blogging is the posting of journal-like pages to a website. While these pages can contain photos or media, they are primarily focused on the easy ability to post written thoughts to a website. The postings are organized chronologically. Typically, a blog "post" can be "commented" on by others, allowing for a dialogue on a the topic of the post. Teachers and educators have used blogs to allow for what is commonly called "peer review," meaning that students can post writings or assignments to the web, and other students can respond or encourage through the comment feature.

In a broader and more educational system, blogs are about communicating. You observe your experience, reflect on it, and then write about it. Other people read your reflections, respond from their perspectives by commenting or writing their own blog article. You read their perspectives, often learn something through their eyes, and write some more.

    1. Blogging is about reading and writing.
    2. Literacy is about reading and writing.

    What blogging does for students

Another benefit to educational blogging (and wiki-writing) is the opportunity for the student to find a personal "voice" and to develop individual interests. Much like journal-writing, blogging gives wings to ideas that otherwise may can stay trapped in the mind. Many individuals find that blog-writing changes their lives in a significant way by allowing them to express their ideas in a medium that appears to have life and longevity--and that might find a kindred audience.

It is not expected that all students will take to blogging (just as not all students enjoy writing), but it is believed that blogging has a unique ability to create enthusiasm for writing and the communication of ideas.

Everyone has hobbies and interests.  These are usually the things we love to do when we need a break from work or school or even the stresses of our lives.  One of my hobbies is photography.  Finding beautiful scenes or wildlife has become my passion and I love escaping life for a little while at a time to photograph.  This weekend I finally, after looking all summer, found some wildlife to photograph.  Four beautiful black bears just by Marten Mountain.  A mama and three cubs.  I felt very blessed with the opportunity and loved every moment.
This is just one of the hobbies in my life that brings joy and fulfillment.  What are some of your hobbies?  What do you love to do?  Parents can get in on blogs too.  It would be nice to see student and parent perspectives.
