Well, as fast as fall came-winter has too!  We are working hard these next few weeks before our holiday break.

In social studies we have started our study of pioneers and Routt County history.  The children will be walking to the museum either this week or next week to learn about the Crawford family and other important events in our counties history.  After the break the children will get to make their own pioneer project (with your help!).  They can choose from things like:  making butter, applesauce, a Jacob's Ladder, tin punch art, sewing, and pioneer toys.  Whichever they choose to make, their teacher will provide the directions.  This is another fun unit for them to learn more about Steamboat.

Next Friday, December 11th, is the all 3rd grade holiday brunch.  We will enjoy brunch and visiting from 9:15-10:15.

3rd grade has adopted a United Way family.  If you can send in items on the wish list or Wal-Mart, Safeway, and/or City Market gift cards we would really appreciate it!

Enjoy the break with you and yours!  Can you believe it is almost the half way point?!

    Take care!

Wow!  Fall has come quickly and will probably leave just as fast!

We have wrapped up tourism in social studies and have moved right into science.  We have been focusing on the topic of water and have two exciting trips planned.  This Thursday, October 1st, we will be at Stagecoach Dam and Reservoir and next Thursday, the 8th, we will be at Waste Water Treatment and the Water Treatment plant.  Both trips take us outdoors for the majority of the time.  Please ensure your child is dressed in layers!  Also, if you want a school sack lunch, noitify your child's classroom teacher at least one week before the trip.

In math we are finishing up chapter one and will have our first math test soon!  Chapter 2 takes us into adding and subtracting whole numbers and will take us back to working hard on our basic facts and learning new skills like:  number stories, fact families, and algorithms.  Look for the new vocabulary and answer key to come home with your child.

The district writing assessment was last week and we will share your childs with you at our November conferences.  We have been busy writing friendly letters and summaries.

    Third Grade News for March

    Dear Families,

The third graders ended our Space Unit and we are moving into Economics.  The students did a great job researching a planet then writing a report.

Economics is beginning. We will be focusing on Steamboat’s economy and will visit several local businesses. New vocabulary and concepts will be taught which include: needs & wants, goods & services, decision making, profit and loss, advertising, and others. Watch for field trip notes and call your child’s teacher if you can be a parent helper.  We will start our business in the classroom and be busy crafting.  We need parent volunteers to support the crafting so please watch for a note.

Reading Olympics is winding down.  Check your recording sheets and don’t leave the remaining books and projects to the last minute.  Keep up the hard work!

We enjoyed meeting with you at parent teacher conferences.  Thanks for all your support.

    The Third Grade Team J
