As summer approaches parents and children are eager to play, relax, and enjoy lovely Steamboat. Now is also a good time to be thinking about ways to keep your child reading throughout the summer. Steamboat offers a variety of options. Soda Creek offers a free Summer Reading Program in the Soda Creek Media Center and Computer Lab. The days and hours available are as follows:
June 16-August 5
Tuesdays 9:00 am -12:00 noon
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Wednesdays 9:00 am -12:00 noon
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
How does it work?
Children kindergarten - fifth grades come with a parent or adult (most children come for 20-30 minute time blocks)
Check out books from the library
Read your book at home
Come back with a parent the next day or next week to take an ARC (Accelerated Reading Computer) Quiz using leveled ARC books
Explore other reading programs on our computers
Check out new books
This program is generously funded by the Technology Commission with the 1/2 cent sales tax money for education. Two licensed experienced first grade teachers are present to assist you and your child. We have free registration forms in our office.
Bud Werner Public Library has a free summer reading program. More details will be forthcoming.
Summer School plans are being discussed and more information will be available in late May.
As always, please continue to read to and with your child on a daily basis over the summer to keep your child's skills in reading fine tuned.
