As we approach the holiday season, I find myself thinking of all the things I am thankful for. I am thankful for all the students who make me smile each day when they come to the media center to get new books to read. I am also thankful to parents who have instilled a love for reading in their children and to teachers who teach students the love of reading everyday. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy time sharing those things you love.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Scholastic Book Fair! We sold $3850 and were able to get a profit of $900 which will be kept in an account to be used at our new school next year. I appreciate our staff volunteers, student volunteers Andrea Monsalve and Dillon Doomstorm, as well as our family volunteer Mrs. Helen Michael. Thank you to Kroger on South Cobb Drive for donating baked goods for our family events. If you were unable to attend the book fair there is still time to visit the bookfair online to help support our school. You can visit the site until November 4th. http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/brownelementaryschool1
We will have another book fair in February and the BOGO book fair at the end of May.
Thank you again for your continued support for promoting reading and support of our media center.

We were slow to get started with AR this school year because the county had some internet issues. We are now back on track and able to access AR without issue, most of the time. Since students and teachers were unable to access AR for the first several weeks of school, the first nine weeks AR school store and Road to reading Success will be adjusted.
We have also made a few changes to AR at Brown. Students are not required to participate in AR, however those students who are capable of reading independently are encouraged to read at least one on level AR book. Students may check out a choice book that is either on or above their reading level. Parents are encouraged to visit the media center to check out books for their child as well. Children enjoy being read to and can learn new vocabulary by listening to books above their independent reading level. I hope you will visit the library with your child to find a great book to share!

We are well into the reading grove now! All students have been to the media center to check out books with their class. In grades 1-5 students are allowed to bring home their books. I hope you have enjoyed reading with your child and seeing what new things they are intereseted in. We are editing the AR program a little this year. Students in grades 2-5 get 2 books. One book MUST be on their reading level, the other book may be a choice book or another on level AR book. If a student chooses to read a chapter book, then the chapter book must be on their level AR book. Chapter books are longer and require greater concentration & advanced comprehension skills, therefore it needs to be on a child's reading level that is appropriate, not too easy, not too hard, and content appropriate. First grade is still working on book responsibility. Once a student earns 6 stickers on their library card he/she can check out 2 books with the same guidelines as above. Kindergareten students will probably begin bringing their books home after conferences. They need more practice and time learning how to take care of a book.
I hope you were able to visit the media center during Open House. If not, you are welcome to come by anytime. Parents can check out books for their children as well. No library card needed.
I hope to see you soon!
    Happy Reading!

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a great summer and were able to enjoy some great books! This will be our last year at Brown. As we prepare for the move to the New Smyrna School, the media center will not be ordering a lot of books this year since all of the books & materials will stay at Brown for the incoming schools to use. I will be spending media center funds for online subscriptions such as Glogster for the students to use for multimedia projects. I will purchase some books per requests from students and teachers, but will focus on technology subscriptions for students use.
There will be two regular book fairs during the school year and a BOGO sale in May.
We will continue the AR program this year for all grades. Instead of requiring students to have 2 AR books, students will have the opportunity to check out an AR book on their reading level and a free choice book. If you would like more information about check out procedures, please go to the Media Center procedures page located on the left navigation bar. I look forward to seeing all the students this week. Remember parents, you can come to the Media Center to check out books too!

Welcome 2012! I hope you all had a wonderful break and holiday season. We are back in school and already working towards new AR goals! If you have not signed up for home connect I encourage you to do so. You can view each AR test & score your child takes and you have the opportunity to sign up for email alerts. You can also see your child's AR goal for the 9 weeks. Each child has a comprehension, point, and book level goal. If you have questions about your child's goals, you can contact his/her teacher. I encourage parents to get involved with their child's AR progress by using home connect as a communication tool. A comprehension score of 80% is the minimum score accepted for passing. If your child is scoring below 80% he/she may not be fully comprehending what he/she read. There are a few things parents can do to encourage optimum comprehension. First, ask your child questions about the book. Who were the characters, what was your favorite part, what happened in the book, how would you change the ending, and other questions that engage your child to think about what he/she read. Secondly, parents should either sit with their child while reading and read with him/her or just listen but either way be engaged. Thirdly, show an interest in reading yourself. Make trips to the public library together, read books, magazines, or any other reading material to show your child you enjoy reading. Above all enjoy spending time with your child and encourage a love of reading by setting the example.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped to support our book fair. We sold over $3,800 worth of materials and received a cash profit of $500 and $1,100 in Scholastic dollars to buy books from Scholastic. The cash profit will be used to purchase technology subscriptions for the school as well as other technology/media needs for the media center. Since we will not be having our school level conference week at Brown in February, I am not sure if we will be able to host another regular fair. I will be hosting the Buy One Get One Free sale in May. Our school does not receive any profit from that fair, it is purely for kids, parents, & teachers to get discounted books.
I bought over 25 new books from this past fair that will be available soon for student check out. I look forward to seeing you all in the media center soon.
