    Achilles is now in action.  After driving the Trojans back to the castle walls, and after fighting a supernatural river, Achilles is now calling out for Hector to face him one on one. 
     
    1.) Achilles is so furious, he doesn't realize who he's fighting at the beginning at the chapter.  Who is it?

    Achilles has backed the Trojans and allowed at least a brief moment to discuss further battle plans.  Achilles and Aggamemnon are about to reconcile their conflict.

    Hector has killed Patroclus and taken Achilles' armor for himself.  Jove disapproves of this and promises to bring glory to Achilles.  The fight for Patroclus's body ends with the Greeks being able to recover it.  Achilles is about to get word of his cousin's death.

    Jove awakes to find the mischief caused by Juno.  He commands Neptune to leave the battle, and now the battle by the ships becomes too close to call; both sides fighting fiercely.

    While Patroclus returns to Achilles, the battle continues to rage / The Trojans are about (at the end of chapter 12) to obliterate the last wall of defense the Greeks have, despite Neptune's encouragement.  The ships are about to be under direct fire with little hope of escape.

    With the Trojans camped for the night surrounding the Greek army and ships, and Achilles unwilling to fight, the Greeks send Diomed and Ulysses out to spy and discover the plans of Hector and the Trojans.

    During chapters 7 and 8, the Trojans have pushed the Greeks back to the Ocean shore and are about to rout them completely had not night fallen upon the land.  The Greeks are now realizing their need for Achilles.
