Our spring IRI testing is next week!  Please be sure you are reading with your child every night!  We want all of our students to be able to read at least 53 words a minute!  Remember that a little practice goes a long way!

We are continuing to learn about plants this week.  Students have learned to identify the parts of a plant and how a plant gets food from soil.  Ask your child about what he or she has learned!

I am wondering how many parents actually visit this website.  If you are reading this, write me a note that you read my post.  I will give your child and extra $20.00 of our classroom money.  I hope I will hear from someone soon!

I can't believe it has been 2 weeks since my last post!  Time is flying by too quickly!  We are so busy here at school that I haven't had time to post what is going on in our room!  We are busy reading and writing all day long!  The students are becoming such good readers!  It is so much fun to watch them blossom and grow!  I am sure you are noticing their improved reading at home!

Today we are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King. We will be learning about the importance of treating everyone fairly and kindly.  We are also going to continue learning about Jan Brett's books.  We read  "The Mitten" last week. Today we are going to read "The Hat". We will be comparing and contrasting the two stories.  If you would like to learn more about her stories, visit www.janbrett.com for some fun games and activities.

It was great to be back in our classroom today!  Everyone came back ready to learn!  It was so good to see everyone!  We learned about "th" and practiced our sight words. We also set a goal for the new year!  Now let's see how we do!

I hope everyone had a wonderful break!  Now it is time to jump back into school and get everyone reading!  Our Winter IRI is just around the corner.  Our goal is to have everyone read 23 words per minute or higher!  Please help your child reach this goal by practicing reading every night!  The students also need to be learning all of their sight words!  The year is almost half way over and we need to work together to get every student ready for 2nd grade!

Wow!  The month is flying by!  We just finished up our shapes unit in math. We have started working on solving story problems.  So far, the students are doing great!  They are drawing pictures and number sentences to match the stories.  I am very impressed with their work!

We are still working on our gingerbread unit.  We are learning about characters and settings of different stories. We are also learning how to compare and contrast stories.

Today we were learning about the "dge" spelling for the sound of j.  We made fudge in class to help us remember the spelling.  It was delicious!

We also worked on graphing and solving story problems using gingerbread men.  The students are doing a great job with using manipulatives to solve math problems!

We explored triangles today in math. We sorted them, drew them and made them on the geoboards.  We learned that they have 3 sides and 3 vertices.

We also started our gingerbread unit today. We read about the gingerbread man and how he jumped out of the oven and ran away.  We are going to have a lot of fun with this unit!  Tomorrow we will decorate gingerbread men and write about them.
