What an amazing early Spring we're having!  The weather for Spring Break has been excellent - even for those who didn't travel someplace warmer.  Who could ask for more?

Spring brings new beginnings at work as well.  The Tech Plan is written, approved and behind us for now.  ISAT is over.  Staff members are signing up for summer classes around time carved out for a bit of relaxation and renewal.  For the tech team, it's a time to look to summer and then a new school year.  Upgrades have begun.  It's time to think about Cybrarian web links work and the Tech Institute for 2012.

    Yep.  New beginnings.

Digital Learning Day is February 1, 2012!

I have challenged our staff to try something new that day.  That challenge and information about Digital Learning Day as well as some recommended links to take for a test drive are on the home page of our District Web Links.

Use this post to add a comment to let us know what you tried, how it went and what thoughts you have about it.  Then check back and see what others have posted as well!

It's a new year, and the school year is in full swing again.  Two major projects are uppermost in my mind.

First, our district technology plan for school years 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 is due in February.  That is a huge but important undertaking.  January is a good time to be working on it, as we take stock of where we are and look towards where we hope to head.

Second, the month of January, for me, is the month to kick off our pilot project math blog with four second grade teachers.  It's titled "Math Talk 2" and its goal is to get students and teachers dialoguing about math processes, strategies and concepts.  To get "into their head" and find out what they're thinking and seeing and understanding and even struggling with.  Research shows that students who can conjure up mental imagery do better in math in the long run.  It's even better if they can do so in color!  Moving from concrete to abstract can involve manipulatives, to paper picture/doodles, to mental imagery as understanding as well as solutions take place.  I'm "taking" January to post myself and set the stage for the second grade teachers to begin posting with their classes.  When a staff member posts, all classes will use that post, then their teacher will post comments/reply for them as a class.  Thus, everyone will weigh in - and get a chance to get others views as well.

It's a private blog for now, but below are my two posts for January - to give you a hint of what we're about!

I really enjoyed visiting your class!  I visited four second grade classes, actually – Mrs. Stenger, Mrs. Masters and Miss Sollberger at Armstrong plus Mrs. Howell and Mrs. Dowell at Wilson.  Your hard work got me thinking about math.  I plan to visit your classroom again, but in the meantime, I’d like to use this blog to have a conversation with all of you about math.

Today I want to talk about pictures.  Yes, pictures!  They are a tool or strategy I use when given a math problem I have to think about to solve.  Sometimes I actually draw the math problem on paper and sometimes I just do it in my mind or imagination.  Can you see pictures in your mind?  What about numbers?  Sometimes it helps me to close my eyes so I can concentrate better.  Let’s try something together!

    Mind_Pictures.mp3

Talk a little about what you were able to see in your mind, what was hard to see and anything you couldn’t see.  Have your teacher share about that when she posts a blog comment!

Next, look at the images below one at a time.  Are they pictures?  Are they math problems?  Have a discussion about each one.  After your class talks about them, have your teacher post a comment below to tell me what you think!  You don’t have to all agree.  She can describe different ideas that you might have.

Thanks for spending some time with me today!  Be sure to have your teacher comment about this post telling us about the pictures you made in your minds and what you thought about the images on this blog post.

I hope you enjoyed my first blog post as much as I enjoyed reading your comments!  Great thinking about math!!

Let's start with an activity today.

Click these words to try this:  Five Frame

Now click to try this:  Ten Frame

When asked how many circles or empties are there, did you count them one by one to find the answer?

If you answered no, describe how you knew the answer.

Next I want to do something a little different.

Ask three friends what their favorite food is.
Now ask those same three friends what 2+2 equals.

Did you get different answers for their favorite food?  Share.
Did you get different answers for what 2+2 equals?  Share.

Do the results make sense to you?  Why or why not?
Is thinking about math different than thinking about favorite foods?

Be sure to talk it over before listening to find out what I think!

    Mrs. Olivito's Thoughts.mp3

Because there are so many different ways to think about math, it's really good to know some  math so well that it's just like adding 2+2.  In an instant, you just KNOW the answer!  Below are several links to fun song videos about some of those important facts.  Just click, sit back, and enjoy... or sing along!  We've talked about most of them: doubles, skip counting, making tens and fact families.

    Doubles, Doubles (one to five)

    Doubles, Doubles (six to ten)

Whatcha' gonna' do? (skip count 2's, 5's, 10's)

    What Makes Ten

    Fact Family Video

Hope you enjoyed them as much as I did!

Don't forget to comment and let me know what you're thinking and talking about in math!

Before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and after early October's Tech Institute Day...  ...is always an interesting, busy time for the tech department.  It's filled with new tech thoughts and plans.  Plans for the remainder of the school year and plans - yes - towards next year's October Institute as well.  So what's in the forefront for me?  Math Blogs and Wikularies!  Of course, once I set those ideas in motion, another one emerged via You Tube, where else!?!

October IS just around the corner and school is in full swing.  MAP testing is over (for now), TeacherWeb classroom web pages are up and running, textbooks have been electronically checked out by our new Textbook Tracker system, staff are using the district Moodle for mandated trainings on everything from Bloodbourne Pathogens to Homeless, and our district technology Institute Day (Technology Targeting Learning Achievement) is just over the horizon.  October 7th...  Time for new ideas, new insights, new skills.  Time to share, chat a bit and work a bit.  Details can be found on the TTLA Day page on our district web site.

Along with many other educators, we're headed toward change with standards as well - as we begin to move from the Illinois Learning Standards to the the Common Core.  Here in 86 we'll be taking it slow as we get a firm grasp of the Common Core Standards to maximize this educational opportunity for staff and students alike.  So why do I mention it on a tech page?  Tech is part of the package, teaching 21st century skills and educating students for success in college and the work force...

First step?  How about a smile on the subject?

We did it!    All of the teacher web pages are complete and published!  A big thanks to ALL of you who worked so hard.  They look great and I know the  - parents and grandparents and all who care about the children of our district and their education and future - will appreciate and benefit from their content.

Another much sadder aspect of September is today - the 10th anniversary of 9/11...  I'd like to share a little video as food for thought on such a day...  The Meaning of Life.

The start of a new school year always brings mixed feelings and lots to do.  It brings new beginnings as well...  a fresh start of sorts full of hope and opportunity.

The tech department is no exception.  A number of labs at CJHS have new workstations and Lincoln is piloting our implementation of an upgrade to our ZENWorks server.  New staff will soon be here for orientation, including an orientation to the tech in district.  Textbook Tracker is in the final stages of setup and use.  For the first time students will check out their textbooks electronically.  New and updated staff classroom web pages will appear by September 1st.  We'll be using our district Moodle to train and track district mandated trainings.  Plus plans are in the works for me to be out in the buildings more - an annual goal for me!

A big welcome to a new school year and new beginnings!

The end of the school year, that is...  It's always a busy, exciting yet just-a-bit-sad time!  Three initiatives are keeping me occupied:
    1. Textbook Tracker.  It's new software the district has purchased to check in/out all district textbooks.  It's a great way to account for them and save some money as well.  It's a big job getting it set up, however!
    2. TeacherWeb.  I'm finishing up training for the school year to help staff meet that September 1st, 2011 deadline to have a classroom web page published.
    3. TTLA Day.  That's our October Teacher Institute day, Technology Targeting Learning Achievement.  I head the committee that plans and implements the day.  It's shaping up nicely!

It's April Fool's Day and I am SO looking forward to Spring, "No foolin'!"

The History Of April Fools' Day

As we're headed into Spring and the end of the school year, many staff are ready to "officially publish" their TeacherWeb sites.  Sending: A big thank you to them for all their work!  <loud clapping and cheering>  That's one way we're working and planning towards next school year.  Another 2011-2012 event in the planning and work stages is our October Teacher Institute Day or TTLA Day (Technology Targeting Learning Achievement Day).  The Professional Development and Curriculum & Instruction sub-committees of our larger district technology committee have planned the day, and staff members who generously accepted our volunteering them to lead sessions have been meeting with me to plan those sessions.  You can take a look at what we've organized so far by using the Staff, Technology, then TTLA Day links from our district web site.

By September 1st, 2011 all district staff will have a web page.  It's past due in many ways, but a giant leap in others.  I am so very proud of all of our staff who are working so hard to make this happen.  I know they share my hope for improved communication as we work together for academic achievement for the students of our district!
