Today, I helped with the DIBELS testing. It was a long day. I missed the class. We have so much to do, starting a new reading book and getting into routines,  but testing is important so we can help the children learn in the best way.  The substitute teacher said the kids were good.

I am seeing good improvements in handwriting and letter/sound recognition. I know we will be beginning the journal writing soon.

We had a good week. The kids seem to be enjoying the new classroom situation. I did have a few that fell asleep once in the afternoon during story time, but most were glad to hear that we don't take naps.
All of our reading materials have not come in yet and I am still feeling a bit unorganized as I have not gotten my room in the right configuration since the Promethean board was installed.
The children are learning new things every day and I look forward to watching them grow and "bloom."

The first day of school was Friday. It started with children arriving in the classroom as early as 7:55. We took a trip around the room, then around the school. We learned how to respond to the bell, lights out, and intercom. W learned where to go if we have a fire, or fire drill. We practiced good listening, letter sounds and reading words. We learned a new friend's name and played some games. We sang a song and read a Morning Message. We wrote our names, drew a picture of ourselves and colored a Classroom Helper picture. We had fun at "play centers" and practiced dismissal routines. We also learned a little about our Promethean board. We had a good day!

School is already buzzing with activity. I have been at school almost every day for a week now. Cleaning and getting organized for a new school year is a real challenge. But I am having fun as I anticipate the new students who will sit in those little desks and learn great things!

Tomorrow is Meet and Greet. I hope all of the students are able to come, as it sure makes the first day easier when the children know where they will go and see a teacher they have already met.

This year I have a Promethean board in my classroom and am preparing many lessons to be used there. We have a new Reading series which has lots of new words. Some of the words are listed on the link page.

This week I will start posting homework and class newsletters so parents can see what we are doing in class. I really am getting excited about school starting this week. I hope the kids are as ready as I am!

It is a quiet evening. I have been shopping and organizing today.
I am going through the school things I have at home and checking online for any new curriculum links. I am beginning to get excited about the new year.
This year we will have a new Reading series and I have already looked over the stories and am happy to say they are really fun to read. I know the students will enjoy them.
Tomorrow I am going to Cypress Cove to help with the Registration of new students. I am looking forward to that!

The 4th of July is a special holiday where we celebrate the freedoms we have in America.
My family got together and had a big barbecue dinner and talked about the many blessings we have. We are very thankful that we live in a free country and we thank the men and women who keep us safe and free.
Summer is slowly slipping away, and soon school will be back in session.
I am looking forward to a new school year.

It has been a few weeks since I have been here.

I spent a week in North Dakota the first week in June and had a wonderful time visiting my 102 year old Grammy. She lives in a nursing home now and is still mentally alert although she cannot see or hear well.  I also visited with an aunt and uncle who were wonderful to talk to. The weather in North Dakota was downright chilly! I was expecting mid 70 highs but was surprised by the cool breeze that kept temperatures in the high 60's. We had quite a few showers and one "rainy day" that didn't get above 53 degrees! So the warmth felt good when we arrived back in New Orleans, although it has been a bit too hot for me to spend a lot of time outside.

June 16 and 17th I joined the faculty at Cypress Cove for a summer retreat in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. It was very nice there and we had a lot of fun learning and working together.

Here I sit on a Sunday evening updating my web page for the summer. After spending several hours today flying around cyberspace, I happened to come across a web page with a "Blog."  "What a neat idea!" I thought. So here goes:

My summer is going well. It is the first day of June and since the last day of school, I have cleaned my classroom, done a lot of resting, walked around my neighborhood, shopped two whole days, and weeded one of the garden areas already.  I have made several delicious meals for my family and have loved spending "quality time" with my two cats.  I am also busy organizing my school stuff for the upcoming year.  Of course one of my favorite things to do at home is to learn about  new ideas for the upcoming school year by surfing cyberspace.  I will try to log in several times during the summer to let you know what is going on.  Email me at the school website or the link at the top of the page.
