The third grade students will participate in a program called mini-society as a part of the Social Studies curriculum. Mini-society is an opportunity for students to create and participate in a society. Some skills will include creating and naming the society, creating laws, establishing a system of currency, trading, running a government, and participating in market day.

Our class has begun the process of establishing our society. After learning about how different cities, states, and countries received their names, our class shared names for our society. Students then voted on the different names. The winning name is "Cool Kids City!" Since we have a name, we are moving on to creating a flag and a pledge for our city. We have learned about the symbols, colors, and reasons for flags of different countries and states. The students will create flags and write about their designs. The society will vote on and adopt a flag within the next few days! Its such an exciting time of the year as we begin so many fun and exciting projects. Be sure to check back often for updates and pictures of the flag!!

Wow! The first day of school was great!! We are off to a great year. We learned a lot about each other while we did some class community building activities. We also started creating Flat Stanleys for a project that we will complete during the year. I read a book to the class called The Crayon Box That Talked. It is one of my favorites. Then the students created their own crayon telling why they are special. Ask your child about the story. Here are some pictures of our classroom and the first bulletin board of work that the students created. This year is going to be a great one. Be sure to check back here often for lots of updates and information about our classroom and our projects!!

I can't believe this year has flown by so quickly. We have accomplished so much this year. All of my students have become better readers, writers, and problem solvers. They have grown up so much and I know they will be successful as they begin their middle school journey. I am proud of every student and hope that they will keep me updated on their progress as they continue to grow and to learn. Have a wonderful summer!!

Wow, it's been a while since we've written. The students recently completed iLEAP testing. Everyone gave 100% effort during testing week. I am very proud of all their work! Now it is on to the busy season. As we return from Spring Break, we have a busy week. This week the third grade students will attend a field trip to Baton Rouge, LA. Be sure to check back next week for pictures and descriptions from the students. Then on Friday, the third grade students will participate in Mini-Society Market Day. It is a time for students to run a business and sell goods that they have made. Market Day begins at 2:00. We'll include some pitures and information about this fun event next week, too. The students will be busy at work in class working on larger number multiplication, handwriting, and reading. Let's not forget the rehearsals we will soon begin for our play called "Goin' Buggy." The students will perform this play on May 19, 2009. There will lots of information coming home soon. Be sure to check the Monday Memo for lots of information about the upcoming events. Check back next week for pictures for everyone to enjoy!!

Our class is learning about the history of Louisiana. We did projects about the Native American tribes in Louisiana. Some groups created a poster and some groups created Power Point slideshows. We shared them with the class.

Our class read the book Flat Stanley. We are exchanging Flat Stanleys with other schools. Here are pictures of Flat Jonathan, Emily, & Yvad in Atlanta, Georgia.

We are keeping track of the different states that our Stanleys have visited.
It is fun to hear about the states and the adventures. We are about to send some more Stanleys out to Mississippi and Texas. We are waiting for some to arrive back home from Florida and Arizona. Keep checking back to hear about all the exciting things we are doing in our classroom!

Wow! We've had a busy week. Our class was in charge of the MES mock election. We started the project by electing some officials in our class. We had 2 registrar of voters (Christian and Ainsley) and 2 clerks (Jonathon and Ashley). The registrars had a team of classmates that created voter registration cards for all of the second and third grade students. They worked hard to get all students registered to vote. In the classrooms, students discussed the importance of voting and how elections are run. The students also discussed the importance of different issues like, the education system, and national security. Then the clerks and their team ran the election in our classroom. They checked voter cards, had students sign-in, and helped everyone make their choices on the voting machines (computers). Even with all of this action going on for two days, the students worked to complete assignments and study. I am really proud of the class for all of their hard work. We'll have to keep you posted on the results. Our class will present the results to the students of MES on Monday morning. Ask your child about this fun event!
