Hey there, Skippers! So much talk has been circulating about JazzFest. Many of the students around MHS, and people that are looking forward to JazzFest in the area have spoken about the singer John Mayer. John Mayer isan American pop and blues rock musician, singer-songwriter, recording artist, and music producer. He was scheduled to perform at the upcoming JazzFest 2012, in New Orleans.

He released news that he must cancel this performance and his whole tour because of throat problems. A replacement has not been announced yet, but many who were excited are now disappointed and let down. Brenden Hitzman, a sophomore here, says “I’m really bummed, and I’m not going to lie I was looking forward to seeing him. I understand though, he’s a talented guy.” Also, Kate Dragna, a sophomore as well says, “I will move on but I’m looking forward to who will take his place!”

So, if you guys love music, John Mayer or not, you should still check out JazzFest. It takes place in the heart of New Orleans and you’re guaranteed a great time!

Hey Skippers! The Block parties are back! If you don't know what they are, they are fun, eventful little festivals that happen every last Friday of the month. They take place on Columbia Street in Downtown Covington. They typically start at 6:00 p.m. and end around 10 p.m. The streets are blocked off and then they are filled with old antique cars, unique local artwork, and loud live music. The stores, coffee shops, and restuarants are also open. You can walk around and just enjoy the surroundings. Emma Sharp, a junior, says, "I go every last Friday, they are a blast and I enjoy them very much!" Also, Gabbi Russano, a sophomore, says, "They are fun to hangout at, and I love the music and food." So, if you have no plans for you Friday night, come! The next one is Friday, March 25th. You will have a blast!

Hey Music Lovers! Your ears are missing out. There are several different types of music to hear other than our classic and not so classic American tunes. Did you know that many countries across the globe have the a few of the same top hits America does? Cultural music is very interesting, because each country has their own style! Here are some top hit albums from around the world:

    1.) Portugal- Adele: 21

2.) Spain- Amaral: Hacia Lo Salvaje

3.) Ireland- James Morrison: The Awakening

4.) France- Orelsan: Le chant des sirenes

As many can see, numerous countries listen to some of the same music as Americans do. It is extremely interesting that some countries have completely different cultures but have similar musical tastes. Adele seems very popular in most countries, as well as most upbeat genres. It's amazing when different nations can share things in common, and in this generation music is a huge aspect!

Hey Skippers! Have you heard there's a new tune in school! The MHS band has many new additions this year. A new band director, who brought with him new music and new expectations for our band. His name is Rossi Dibenedetto, and he has a few positive improvements to add to the band under his belt. Majoring in music education K-12 is quite an accomplishment! Mr. Dibenedetto has his Master's degree in Percussion Performance also. Along with being extremely musically talented, he has coached for various sports teams at past schools.
Mr. Dibenedetto has very high expectations because he says the students are very talented. He wants the marching band to start competing, and go to the Louisiana Showcase for the first time. Also, the band will be performing songs off of the radio and more of the "rock" genre. A bass guitar, electric guitar, and drum set will be added to the band as well. When asked if the band has reached any expectations so far, Dibenedetto says, "They're getting there." If they reach the standard, he always raises the bar higher and tells them there's no turning back!
When asked about plans for the Blue Out game, he said, "Not yet." This means they are working on the Blue Out game's performance schedule! Dibenedetto says, "No matter what, we will keep growing and working together."
So Skippers, we can all agree that this school year will be very eventful as well as exciting. Make sure to keep your ears open during the football games this year! You don't want to miss all that the band has to offer this year.
