The month of October flew by so quickly.  We have been concerned about the students who are not progressing as much as we think they should at this point in the semester.  I have had many discussions and meetings with the administration, teachers, students, and parents to brainstorm new ways to combat the problem.  We will be visiting St. Tammany Jr. High very soon to help out their new FBLA organization and provide peer to peer mentoring.  St. Tammany advisers will join our FBLA members on a trip to the FBLA National Fall Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida this November.  Later in November, Boyet Jr. and St. Tammany Jr. will send some of their teachers with ours to the International Reading Association Fall Conference in New Orleans.  Hopefully they will all come back rejuvenated with new ideas to improve literacy at their schools.

During the last few weeks, I have been extremely busy working on some new academy activities.  Preparing for the first meeting with the transition leadership teams from each of our feeder schools took a lot of time but it turned out awesome!  The people serving on each of the teams were so open and shared information about themselves and their schools with each of us.  I really think we bonded during that morning, and I am more than ecstatic about visiting with them at their schools during a shadow activity.  I am also mentoring two new FBLA advisers at St. Tammany Jr. High who have agreed to sponsor a Future Business Leaders of America middle level chapter.  We attended the Fall Advisers' Meeting in Baton Rouge last week and met during lunch to plan our first leadership conference in Orlando this November.  The Academy teachers have been attending professional development meetings for the past few weeks to keep up-to-date and learn some new strategies to try in their classrooms.  They are also coordinating a community service project, homecoming decorations, and an incentive field trip for the students.  And finally, the big 8th Grade Fright Night event!  I spent Friday visiting middle and jr. high schools in Slidell to invite 8th graders to a Spooky Ice cream Reception and Football Game on October 30th from 5:30-9:30 p.m.  There is a $10 cost to pay for a souvenir t-shirt, wristband, and game ticket so they can watch the football game in a special section reserved for them.  I am so excited about meeting potential students and sharing some information to all of them about high school life.  They should go back to their schools highly motivated to do their best so they can go to high school next year.

Progress reports were sent home to parents last week.  I am concerned that some of our students may be having academic problems, and I want the parents to know that help is available.  Every morning when I come to school I notice that students are standing outside waiting at least 25 minutes for the first period to begin.  They could use this time to visit with their teachers who are offering free tutoring sessions.  This is also a good time to get help on difficult homework questions.  I would like to welcome our students to utilize these services before it is too late.  The report cards for the 1st nine weeks are weeks away, and this is the time to get those grades up.

Open House was held on Tuesday and attendance was low.  The parents missed out on a good presentation by our principal, Mrs. Terri Wortmann and didn't get a chance to meet their kid's teachers.  I wonder what we need to do to get more parents at open house.  I know Mrs. Boudreau publicized it in the newspaper, and it was posted on the Salmen website.  As a parent, I can promise you that every time I attend open house for my children, I learn something new.  Most of the time I am surprised to find out that my children are expected to learn things that I had to learn in school at an earlier age.  Spelling tests in 7th grade are not like the spelling tests that I took way back then.

The Literacy Field trip on Tuesday, September 8th was wonderful!  The students really enjoyed reading to the students at other schools.  Some were able to read to their siblings at the elementary schools and the puppet show presented by the gifted students was a crowd pleaser.  The news quickly spread around school on the following day that we were invited back to read during the Christmas season.  And they were more than excited about the possibility of being selected to Adopt an 8th Grader.  Plans will be made during the Spring to host this activity.

This Thursday, our academy teachers will be trained on using the E-Portal Online Career Program which has been set up by the Louisiana State Department of Education to assist students throughout the state with career planning.  Students will be given more information about this program in the near future.

The students voted on a class t-shirt this Friday.  Those who have paid their $10 student fees will get their shirts very soon.  All students must have a class t-shirt to attend incentive field trips which are coming up very soon.

We had a lot of activities going on this week.  I met with teachers throughout the school regarding activities for International Literacy Day, Sept. 8th.  We plan to take some of our students to Lady of Lourdes, Abney Elementary, St. Tammany Junior High, and Boyet Jr. High on that day to share our love for reading.  Next week we will meet with students who want to participate and send out permission slips.  While we are going to visit other schools, the rest of the school will participate in a D.E.A.R. activity.  That means they will have to drop everything and read for 5 to 10 minutes.  Staff members may also come to school dressed as their favorite chararacters, even our principal, Mrs. Wortmann!

Mr. Comeaux and I also met the freshmen officer candidates to discuss the campaign process.  They will stay after school next week to practice speeches and print out campaign materials.  On Thursday, they will be allowed to bring campaign materials to share.  Then on Friday, they will be allowed to wear business attire to school and present their speeches to the entire freshmen class during an assembly from 12:10-12:45 p.m.  Parents will be welcome but must sign in as visitors in the front office.

On Friday, students received temporary i.d.s and two week progress reports.  They need to bring them back on Monday signed by a parent.  Teachers are trying to get students in the habit of bringing agendas to school daily and doing all of their homework.  Teachers have been calling parents to let them know how their students are doing.  They also reminded students to bring in their student fee of $10 so we could order their spirit shirts to be worn for field trips and spirit days.  The first class to reach 100% in collecting student fees and PTSA membership (Total $13.00) will be treated to a "donut party".

It is only the 2nd week of school and so much is going on.  Everyone is working very hard to make this a great year for the academy students!
