Thank you Khan Klassmates for making this such a fun program!

We are wrapping up the year and we have a few Lottery Prizes left to give away!  You have until Friday, May 18 to watch the last Loop de Loop video and post.  By Monday, all lottery tix should be submitted and we will select the final winners.

Unfortunately, we did not have enough students to participate in the Ecotarium trip.  But I would like to have a Forensics Afternoon- where we solve a case (using science of course!) and have some treats to celebrate.

You are invited help solve a Khan Mystery- The Kase of the Kidnapped Kookies!
    Thursday, 6/7
    3-5pm
We will gather evidence, test samples, solve the crime and then celebrate with a
    Kookie Swap!

All students are asked to bring a 2 dozen cookies to swap.
If every student brings 24 cookies, you will leave with
24 different varieties to ENJOY and take home!

Please RSVP by emailing Mrs. Daigle on TeacherWeb.
    Hope to see you there!

I am trying to organize the overnight field trip to the science museum that we talked about as our culminating trip. I think the cost will be approximately $50 with some scholarship money possible. Please email me (ctms email)---DO NOT BLOG COMMENT- if you are interested so that I can get an accurate count.  If there is sufficient interest, I will try to organize it for the end of May/start of June .

Some of you might be visiting an amusement park this spring- Great East Rocks! -and even I love the loop de loop coasters.  Check out this video about a CAR doing a loop de loop.  It looks like a matchbox car!  Then watch the  subsequent video to see how KHAN explains the physics of why the "little car" doesn't go SPLAT!

    Loop de Loop Question

    Loop de Loop Answer 1

After watching the videos, blog about  2 ideas you felt you already knew and at least 1 that was new information. Also share the name and locale of YOUR favorite rollercoaster!  By the way, how fast is that car going in miles/hour????

    Not an April Fool's question:

Which would fall faster a brick or feather. . . on the moon?

After watching the video, try the experiment suggested in the video.  What happened?  Then do a little digging into Galileo and his famous Leaning Tower of "Pizza" experiment dropping cannon balls.

Check out some websites and try the following link to the "Galileo Games" a thought experiement site.
Share at least one surprise, new insight or question with the group.

In the last couple of weeks we have held 2 lottery drawings for Khantastic Science Goodies.  Congratulations to Alex V, Jack A, Veronica S and Tori T!  Keep blogging and putting in your lottery tickets. . . more entries = more chances to win!

Today was amazing!  Thank you Khan Klassmates for joining Mrs. Schmohl and I at the Lab.  We extracted DNA from stinky onions- and performed a "genetic" diagnostic test using gel electrophoresis- you guys used those pipettes like pros!

    Pictures to come soon.

    Just a quick blog question. . .
Would you have genetic testing?   Pros and Cons?  Ethical Considerations?
Only for genetic diseases . . . how about for genetic selection for traits like gender, eye color, IQ. . .
    Let's start a discussion!

Time to watch a few more videos and dig deeper into our Physics CPO Explorations.

This week you will view 2 new videos:
    Calculating Average Velocity

    Solving for Time

After viewing these videos, post a 3,2,1 blog. . . 3 new ideas you learned from both of the videos, 2 ideas you still have questions about and 1 video in the physics section you have watched and recommend and why.

You will receive 3 lottery tix for this weeks post!
The drawing  from the KHAN KLASSMATE SCIENCY BOX OF AMAZINGNESS will be on Friday!

Also, if Khan Klassmates who attended the afterschool lab and science fair viewing could post thoughts, reflections, take-aways from that afternoon.  I do have information for a summer program available to all students who are interested in Honors Physics for next year.
This extra comment on your blog is worth an extra lottery ticket. . . thank you for your feedback!

Wow! Mrs. Schmohl and I are so happy with the success of this program so far.  We have many active participants and are able to offer 25 spots for our trip to the UMASS Regional Science Resource Center

Regional Science Resource Center Informational Site

on March, 15,2012.  Students who just recently joined us were eligible for the lottery for the remaining 4 spots.  The list of students who will receive a invitations are as follows.  Permission slips will be passed out to students on Monday, 2/27.  Students will be asked to pay $5 to offset bus transportaion costs, and a bagged lunch will be required.  Students will leave for the lab in Shrewsbury at 9am and will return to CTMS at 2:15 pm.
Students who will receive permission slips are :
    Jenn R, Olivia G, Jack A, Jack D, Shaynon B, Jillian S, Scott D, Michael H, Tori T, Veronica S, Jacob S, Andrew V, Jordan L,Alex V, Nolan C, Alison C, Rebecca S, Alli F, Collette P, Bill D, Sami G, Erich S, Cassidy D, Melissa F,Wesley B

A waiting list has been established in case a student cannot attend.

Please RSVP to me by email, so I can get a rough estimate of students who can/cannot attend.

Finally, I would like to invite the Khan Klassmates to an afterschool Khantastic Lab on Tuesday from 3-4pm 2/28 in room 228.  We will be exploring a few experiment stations, ordering pizza and traveling to Wachusett to view the science fair project boards!  I will be able to transport 7 students, but will be asking for parents who might be able to volunteer to give rides to high school.  Students will have to find a ride home.  Our plan is to leave CTMS at 4:30 and walk through the exhibit from 4:45-5:45.  All are welcome!  If you would like to join us, please RSVP to me by email so that I can organize rides and pizza orders

This week I thought we might dabble in a type of chemistry you heard about in the previous Khan videos. . . and even asked about. . .
    Organic Chemistry!

Organic substances are those that are  LIVING.  They usually consist of molecules that have Carbon atoms in them. You are made up of many organic molecules.  There is a whole branch of science dedictated to studying Carbon molecules.  These first 2 videos are "kool" because they give you a glimpse into a whole new language.

This week I would like you to watch the two videos listed below.  Then blog a question about naming an organic compound.    Example: How many Carbons would Heptane have??
Then you must select one to answer.  Talk to each other. . .Have Fun!

    Introduction to Organic Chemistry Molecules
    Naming Organic Molecules called Alkanes

We will have another Lottery drawing this Friday.  This week's lottery will be for the last 5 spaces on the Field Trip on March 15th. and an invitation to an afterschool snack and science session after vacation on February 28th.  We will do perform 2 chemistry labs afterschool, order pizza and go up to WRHS to view the Honors Science Projects. (10 students) We will be looking for any parents who might be able to drive up to Wachusett.  Let me know if your parent might be able to drive. Thanks!
