    Dear Parents,
Please take a moment to check out the March Conference tab to the left. There you will find your scheduled conference time that I have listed. Let me know if this time presents a conflict for you. If not, you will be receiving a confirmation sheet closer to the conference dates to confirm your time. As always, I am happy to accommodate your schedule as best that I can. Thank you!
    Ms. Russell

    Hi everyone,
Happy New Year!  January is under way and we have set some goals for ourselves in the classroom. Our first class meeting after the holiday was a great discussion about how January first graders are capable of so many things.  Take a look and see what goals the children set for themselves. They also described what they will do to meet these goals.  Ask your child which goal is theirs and what they plan to do to achieve it!

My goal is to be reading better.
My goal is to get finished with my school work.
My goal is to not be last one done.
My goal is to not use help from anyone so I can try to get it right without my mom and dad.
My goal is to be a better reader.
My goal is to get better at writing because of the way I write.
My goal is to work on reading at reader's workshop when someone starts to talk to me and I will keep reading.
My goal in school is to get focused on the teacher instead of letting the pictures in my head take me over.
    My goal is to draw.
My goal is to be a better "shoe tier".
My goal is to be a better writer.
My goal is to count numbers in English.
My goal is to be a better reader.
My goal is to get better at phonics.
My goal is to get better at reading.
My goal is to be a better reader.

It is my pleasure to help each and every student reach their goals...and more!!  :)

It was wonderful to see all of you at your child's conference and to discuss their progress as well as set some goals for the upcoming weeks.  Thank you for making the time to meet with me during this busy season.  I also want to thank you for your continued generosity in supporting our classroom with snacks, tissues, band-aids, wipes and beautiful new books from the book fair! I'll be reading each wonderful book that was donated to the class in the upcoming weeks. Thank you again for your generous giving to our classroom!

I hope that you all enjoy your holidays and travel plans.  While we do discuss the holidays and the plans we have with our families, I try to keep things calm and focused on other things (especially since children are saturated with it outside of school through the media and in stores, etc).  We will be having a Welcome to Winter party on December 22nd.  Please allow your child to wear their pajamas to school that day.  They may also bring 1 stuffed animal to snuggle with and books that they love to read from home. In the past, some children have brought slippers and bathrobes.  That is fine if they can manage that along with what they will need for outdoor recess (boots, snow-pants as needed).  Please just send them with what is manageable for them. We will enjoy time reading books on the rug, listening to stories and doing all of our work in our pajamas.  If your child is more comfortable wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants they may do that as well.  This is just for fun and the idea is to be cozy and relaxed during this busy season.

Enjoy your holidays and best wishes for a wonderful new year!

I am looking forward to meeting with you the week of conferences (Dec  7-8)!  Please be sure to bring your copy of your child's report card and any questions you may have with you.  I will be asking you to return the envelope to me when we meet and you may keep the copy of the report.  Be sure to check the December Conferences page to confirm your date and time.  If you need to make a last minute cancelation, please contact me by email or voicemail so that I will be aware.  I also ask you to help me keep on time by arriving a minute or two early and then feel free to knock when it is your conference time if I am still engaged in a conference.  I want to be sure that I don't keep anyone waiting and will do my best to watch the clock since we are all very busy this time of year.

December proves to be a busy month! Be sure to check our web page to see upcoming events. We will welcome in Winter with a PJ Read-In day and will also have a vacation week.  You can find all this information on the Calendar 2011-12 page.

    Thank you!

    Hi Everyone,

Hopefully your power is on and things are getting back to normal.  Thank goodness the schools were up and running so we could keep some things about last week normal!

We are having our first Open House Friday, November 18 from 8:15-8:35. Please come with your First Grader (no siblings if possible, though I've had a request to bring little ones in a stroller so that the parent can come which is fine) and share time looking over their work that they have done so far this year. This is a special time to share so please make arrangements so that you can give your child a few minutes of your undivided attention.  It's greatly appreciated by all.

Be on the lookout for happenings coming from me regarding the first grade work we have been doing here at Cole as well as some goals I have set for your children.

As always, feel free to stay in touch!

    Dear Parents,

Monday, October 31 is the Halloween Parade at Cole School. Ms. Russell's class is looking forward to seeing any parents that can meet us outside at the front of the building for the parade, weather permitting at 10am.  Please remember to send your child with a costume in a labeled bag (IF they wish to dress for the event, no masks, make-up or items to be carried please).  We will do our best to return the costume items to the labeled bag so that it will return to you when your child comes home at the end of the day.  PLEASE DO NOT have your child arrive to school in costume yet they should wear something that is easy for their costume to slip over. This is an early release day at 1:15. Lunch will be served.

    Thank you!

    Hi everyone,

Be on the lookout for your child's progress report coming to you in Friday's back pack mail.  While these progress reports are not designed to set up a mid-term conference, they are to support our home to school connection and let you know how your child is adjusting to first grade.  I will look forward to our conference in December when we can set some appropriate goals for your child's learning.  If you should have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Thank you,

    Peggy Russell
