The 2012 Summer Reading list will be posted on the website by the week of June 4. This year we are recommending specific authors and kids' choice series. Also on the list are books from the public library's theme, "Dream Big-Read!" All Danvers elementary students are encouraged to participate in the summer reading program!

Local business organization DEEP has recently awarded grants to the five elementary school libraries to purchase graphic novels. We are very excited and very grateful to receive these grants. Graphic novels are very popular with our students, and now we have been able to purchase great "starter" collections for each school. The orders have been placed, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the books. Thank you, DEEP!

The schools are teaming up with the Peabody Institute Library in Danvers to provide library cards for students. If a child has lost a card or has never gotten one, they can take home an application from the school library. New or lost cards are free when processed through the schools. Parents and guardians need to fill out and sign the registration form and return it to the school library. Our goal is that 100% of Danvers students will have and use their library cards--both at the public library and to access the many online offerings such as e-books and audiobooks. Let your librarian know if you need a card!

Fourth and fifth graders have been learning about the online resources available through the public library. They have learned about requesting and renewing books online with their library card and a PIN. They have also learned about OverDrive, an online source for eBooks and audiobooks available for free with their library card. They can check www.noblenet.org or the Peabody Institute Library for more info. Online resources will be a big help with summer reading! And don't forget Tumblebooks, accessible through each school's homepage!

T-shirts, sunshine, summer reading...It's in the 70's today, and we are starting to think about the summer reading list! If you have any suggestions for Kids' Choice summer reading, please let your library teacher know. We hope to add this year's new favorite books to the list!

Mrs. S. had a great time at the Mass. School Library conference. Sadly, we did not have a bookmark among the finalists, but I am very proud of the fine work that was submitted by Danvers students this year. It will be fun to see the winning bookmarks, and to gear up for next year! The highlight of the conference for Mrs. S. was meeting authors and illustrators such as Andrew Clements, Jeff Kinney, Jarrett Krososcka, Brian Lies, and many others. Next time you see me, ask me what Andrew Clements' favorite childhood books were. He told me. The answers might surprise you!

Mrs. Sekiguchi will be attending the annual Mass. School Library Association conference next week. The annual bookmark contest winners will be selected and announced at the conference. Judges this year include Brian Lies, Jarrett Krosoczka and Andrew Clements! Good luck to our school winners whose bookmarks were sent on for judging. On Tuesday, Mrs. S. will let you know if you are one of the state honorees! Mrs. S. is also excited about meeting one of the speakers at the conference: Jeff Kinney, author of the Wimpy Kid books. Wow!

Today is the 200th birthday of author Charles Dickens. Happy Birthday, Mr. Dickens! Thank you for giving us so many wonderful stories and characters---Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and yes, Mr. Scrooge. You developed complex and never-boring story lines, you created many memorable and sometimes despicable characters, you kept us on the edge of our seats, you kept us laughing and crying. Thank you, thank you, for your contribution to literature, and for giving the world these unforgettable tales!!

In a library unit on Internet safety, fourth and fifth graders completed an anonymous survey about their Internet use. The survey results have been compiled into graphs that we are now analyzing and discussing during library class. Does it surprise anyone to know that 67 students have Facebook accounts, 186 students have email accounts, and 25 have Twitter accounts? A total of 418 students completed the survey.
