    Today I got outside for the fourth grade recess.  Over the last couple of days, the students that play football have been complaining that only a couple of kids got the ball and the others stood around.  We talked about it and everyone came up with a great solution.  It was a great to see the students working out their differences constructively.  Now if I can just get them to do that when I am not around!  I also have to say that what they are playing does not resemble the game of football at all except for the ball.  It is more like a cross between keep away and rugby.

    Hi Everyone,
    I want to remind everyone that we have moved the Lost and Found boxes upstairs to the front lobby for this week!  You wouldn't believe the beautiful clothing that has been left behind by the kids.  Please stop by and go through the piles to see if you are missing anything.  We are going to leave the boxes up until the middle of next week and then we are going to bring the clothing to Goodwill or ST. Vincent DePaul.  I think we have an especially huge pile of Lost and Found due to the warm weather this winter and kids taking off their jackets and coats when they are outside.

    Don't forget that Friday is Great Oak Green Day!  What fun!

    The Superbowl of Math was a great success!  Ask your kids about it.  They really impressed me with their math knowledge.  Every classroom was challenged to write 3 math questions related to football to ask the other two classrooms.  We had a big football field up on the wall of the cafeteria and every time a classroom answered a question right their football player moved towards the touchdown.  The questions were pretty hard too!
    There were lots of laughs, yelling and math.

    Hello Everyone,
    I am sure you all read or watched on television the story about the two elementary students who decided not to go to school and set off a major search in Worcester.  The school calls every student's home if they are absent, but if you are not reached we must leave a message asking you to call us as your child is not in school.  That is why it is so important that you call our absence line and report your child absent if they are sick etc.  Not only does it save the office staff from having to make phone calls but if something similar ever happened at the Great Oak we would be getting word out faster as we would not be calling homes with sick children in them.
    The absence line number is 978-777-1471 and feel free to leave a message.
    Thanks.

    If selected as the winner, we would win $100,000.00 for the Danvers Public Schools!  The grand prize winner is selected by people voting so it could really be a possibility if we get the news out to folks to vote daily on the website. The voting information is listed below.

    I just got back from the Thorpe school.  During this early dismissal the grade level teachers were broken up into different groups to look at literacy assessments for the year at each grade level.  They were developing rubrics so that there will be consistency in grading from school to school.  Beyond that, there is an excellent sharing of ideas and best practices.  @import url(http://www.teacherweb.com/BLOG/HTMLEditor/Load.ashx?type=style&file=SyntaxHighlighter.css);

    All parents in grades 1-5 should have received a letter from their child's teacher with their child's username and password that will allow them to access the Investigations website.  If your child is having difficulty with homework and you want to assist them, this website will be a valuable resource for you.  At the top of every homework paper, you will find a number in a blue circle.  That will be the page number that you will go to on the website after you have logged in.  Here you will find diagrams and very clear explanations to help your child.  If you do not have access to the internet at home, we also have a hardcover book that is available.  A word of caution though, these books are $25.00 a piece so if you lose it or damage it, it will be quite costly.  @import url(http://www.teacherweb.com/BLOG/HTMLEditor/Load.ashx?type=style&file=SyntaxHighlighter.css);

    Looking forward to a very fun Halloween parade today.

    Hi Everyone,
    I just got my new iphone! Wow, this thing is incredible.  As someone who has had the same phone for the last 6 years, this thing has more features than I can count.

    I have been downloading Apps like crazy and I found one that I am using with my third grade daughter to help her learn multiplication facts.  It is free so anyone can get it.

    It is called "my math app" and it has multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.  If your daughter is like mine, they already know how to work the electronics.  I usually hand it to her when we are in the car and she does about 10-15 minutes of practice.  It's just another way to get her to practice the facts and to get the automaticity that she needs.
