Yes! It does! So here goes...
I came across some art that I thought you all might enjoy. Tell me what you think!

    Louise Bourgeois' ''Maman''

The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.

It is great to be back at Clarke for another school year. I love summer vacation, sleeping in, and days at the beach! I always get excited at the start of a new school year, too! Ahh... the smell of freshly sharpened pencils! :D

Many students have asked me what I did this summer so I thought I would post some pictures of a few highlights.
I went to San Francisco for a few days and had a great time! I stayed in a neighborhood called Japantown that had tons of great Japanese restaurants and shops. Here is a picture of the Peace Pagoda which was a gift from the people of Osaka, Japan. It was designed by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and is a popular site for tourists to visit.

In San Francisco I visited the SFMOMA, or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Here I am in front of a painting by Frida Kahlo, those of you who had me as a teacher in 6th grade may remember that she is one of my favorite artists.
I also Visited Boston's Historic Chinatown. Check out this dragon that was on display. Cool, huh?
I took a class on East Asian History and culture and I got to play one of these Korean drums. Guess what?
    I am a terrible drummer!  :P

I also met Grace Lin, she is a FANTASTIC illustrator and writer and she is local- she lives in Somerville!

I hope you all had as much fun as I did this summer!

    Who Is Confucius?

Confucius said: Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.

Art Class Translation: Arrive prepared for class, always bring a wooden #2 pencil

Confucius said: The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools.

Art Class Translation: Oh, and sharpen it ;)

Confucius said: He with whom neither slander that gradually soaks into the mind, nor statements that startle like a wound in the flesh, are successful, may be called intelligent indeed.

Art Class Translation: No gossiping in the Art Room. You are smarter and better than that.

Confucius said: Without feelings of respect, what is there to distinguish men from beasts?

Art Class Translation: Be respectful to the Art Room and our materials! Clean up after yourself and help keep the room clean, we aren’t pigs!

Confucius said: What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.

Art Class Translation: Be respectful to one another. Be kind with your words and your actions. We all take risks making art and this must be a safe space to do that.

Confucius said: Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes.

And he also said: Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.

Art Class Translation: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, sometimes that’s how we learn. Oh and nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Confucius said: It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.

Art Class Translation: Stay focused, work slowly and carefully…

Confucius said: If a man takes no thought about what is distant, he will find sorrow near at hand.

Art Class Translation: …but remember we DO have deadlines, and if you don’t finish your work you won’t be pleased with your grade.

Confucius said: Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.

    And ms. roy agrees
