Cunniff Extended Day Program
May NewsletterFrom The Site Coordinator
We've had a great month at Extended Day. One highlight was our visits from some dogs rescued by Greyhound Friends Inc. Our students got to learn about greyhounds, racing, and pet adoption. They also got to meet five of the former racers, all in different colors. The dogs were great with our students -- please see the pictures below! We are very grateful to our guests from Greyhound Friends as well as their owners Stoddard, Peter, and Carolyn.
We would like to do a coin drive to benefit Greyhound Friends as a small token of our gratitude. Please consider bringing your extra change beginning on Monday, 5/20/13 and ending on our family night, 5/29/13.Our Second Annual FAMILY NIGHT will be on Wednesday 5/29 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Please join us to see slideshows, video presentations, and displays of the different projects worked on over the past year.
Thank you to Carolyn Pipitone and the PTO who have prepared 3 flower beds near the main entrance for an Extended Day Garden. Special thanks also to our 1st grade students and Ms. Jennel for their work on a garden club.
Finally, keep an eye out for information regarding early release next Wednesday, 5/22. We are open from 12:15 to 6:00 and have special activities planned. Drop-ins are very limited due to headcounts for special events. If you need to add extra coverage for that afternoon, please contact James as soon as possible.
As always, please browse the summaries from our Lead Teachers of what’s going on in each classroom on the back of this newsletter.

This past month has been full of many fun activities! It started with opening our own prek-k art gallery, which allowed us to share our art work with our classmates and families! We then explored the U.S. Postal Service as we created a mail truck, mail sorters, and played with many postal supplies. We also wrote letters to Ms. Jen. This unit ended in transforming the classroom into our own Prek-k Post Office. Students are also whiting letters to Disney Characters and/or the White House. Please speak to me or James with any questions about our letters. Up next we will be taking a look into the Olympic Games as we work towards setting up the Cunniff Games! From Ms. Jessie (1st grade room):
After finishing up the Spongebob episodes (we can't wait to show some to parents at the family night this month!), the first graders spent some time coming up with ways to create a model of a city. The kids drew maps of Watertown, brainstormed a giant list of what cities have in them, and thought about what materials we could use to build houses, stores, restaurants, schools, and other buildings. We painted roads and we just started constructing buildings out of boxes and other recycled materials. We can't wait to see how great the final product will look! From Ms. Martha (1st and 2nd grade room):
This week, we are wrapping up the ocean project that we have been working on for the last couple of months in the 1st and 2nd grade class. The last stage of the project was for students to create a collage of their sea creature using pieces of paper cut out from magazines. Students really put a lot of effort into their collages and they came out great! Then students made a poster with a little bit of information about their animal and included the collage. We will begin putting together a little video for family night in a couple of weeks featuring each student and their poster!
From Mr. Ken (3rd 4th and 5th grade room):
Hello to all from the 3-5 room! This month we have made a ton of progress on our homemade roller coasters. The kids have been working hard and we will be showing these off at family night later this month – we hope you can make it. We are hoping to have some outdoor projects in the coming weeks so we can enjoy the nice weather. Let’s hope the rain stays away! We look forward to seeing you all at family night.
