For this week's blog, please answer the following questions about the poster you have been working on.  Remember, you might want to copy and paste the questions as you make your comment.

    1.  What topic did you choose?

    2.  What did you include on your poster to draw attention to your cause? (quotes? images? photos?)

    3.  Who/what inspired you to choose this cause?  What brought your attention to this cause in the first place?

    4.  What is one way that we could improve this issue in our world?

For this blog, please visit the pages titled "8th Grade Book Trailers: March 2011."  After viewing the trailers, click on "comment" one time, and make comments to five of your classmates.  Address them by name.  I'd like for you identify specific parts of their trailers for your comments.  Please do not make vague comments such as, "It was great!" Instead, identify specific portions of the trailers that really enhanced your classmates' presentations.  For extra credit, you may add a sixth comment:  yourself.  What did you do well, and what would you change if you were to make another book trailer?

    BLOG #4: Theme
    Due: Thursday, 1/6/11
    Value: 25-point quiz grade

A theme is an idea or message about life, society, or human nature. But to discover a theme, you need to look “under the surface” of the book or novel. Through characters’ actions, conversation, details and events, the author reveals his or her ideas about the world. Understanding theme involves understanding plot, characters, and setting.

State your book title in your first sentence. The next sentence will explain a theme based on your independent reading book. The third sentence will provide examples from the book that support your theme. Remember the list of possible themes from class to help you get started! You may explain more than one theme as long as you have specific examples from your book to support each theme.

Blog #3 – TV SHOW PLOT SUMMARY

    DUE: Tuesday, December 21

    VALUE: 100 point test

Directions: Your assignment this week is to watch TV! Can you believe it? You are to choose a program to watch and write a summary of the plot of the show. You should include these words: plot, exposition, setting, characters, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. The words do not have to be in that order. For bonus points, you may include the word “theme” as well.

If you do not watch TV, or if you choose not to do this assignment for a TV show, it can easily be done for a short story. We have several short stories in our classroom to choose from. If you are not able to post your summary to the blog, simply bring in a neatly written or typed copy of the summary.

Since this is a longer blog post than usual, it will be our only one this week. Also, this will be the assessment for the vocabulary words above. Therefore, it will be worth a 100-point test grade. This is not an assignment you can afford to miss! Please ask me any questions by Monday, December 20.
