    Hello!!!
I am getting better by the day - thank you for the continued support!

As part of recovery, I have been working on bending and straightening my new titanium knee.  Some days it hurts more than others.  The average person can bend their knee to make a 120 degree angle.  Right now I can bend my knee on my own to make a Right Angle (90 degrees).  If the physical therapist pushes my knee really hard as far as it can go, she can get it to bend to 103 degrees...then I  am really sore!

How much farther do I have to bend my knee on my own?  Remember, I can make it to a Right Angle by myself...

Welcome back after the long weekend.  I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather.  I was able to sit outside for a short while which helped to keep my spirits up.

Thank you to homeroom  208 for the picture today!  It really cheered me up!

Thank you to all of the students and parents that stopped in to say hello today.  I have been anxious about getting to know everyone so today was a big help!

Mrs. Consoletti has kindly typed up a survey for everyone to complete.  She will send it along to me so I can learn all about you and your family while I am recovering.  Take care and enjoy your last week of summer!

    Dear Student,

My name is Mrs. Ekstrom and I will be your teacher for the 2009-2010 school year. I hope that you have had a wonderful summer. We are very close to beginning the new school year. School this year will begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2009

I would like to take a few moments to tell you a little about myself. This will be my eighth year teaching sixth grade at Whitin. I am teamed with the famous Mr. Raymond. He teaches Language Arts and Social Studies and I teach Math and Science.

You may or may not be aware of my chronic knee problems.      I have had a condition called Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of eleven. Over the past few years, I have had several surgeries to help correct some of the complications that come with the JRA, but they have been unsuccessful. This past year has been the most difficult and painful. I have been fortunate enough to work with a team of doctors at The New England Baptist Hospital in Boston in hopes to put me on the path to recovery. This path is leading me to a total knee replacement on August 28, 2009. I understand that the timing of this surgery is inconvenient to the start of the school year and it was a very difficult decision for me to make. But it is one that I must make for my personal growth.

I have been informed from my doctor that I will be out of school for approximately eight weeks. My substitute will be Mrs. Andrea Consoletti. She and I have been working very hard this summer planning for the beginning of the school year. I feel so lucky to have her as my temporary replacement. Not only is she hard working and energetic, but her dedication to WhitinMiddle School is outstanding.

To make this transition as easy as possible for you, Mrs. Consoletti and I have arranged to be here on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 2 – 6 p.m. You are invited to come in with your parents to meet us and ask any questions you may have. I hope to see you there!

                                                                                        Mrs. Ekstrom

I was fortunate enough to have a crew of students from last year come in today to help paint the room.  They did a great job!

Thanks to all of my helpers!

As I start to prepare for school each year, I try to focus on a few smaller classroom goals.  My number one priority this year is learning (of course) but I would like to place a special emphasis on making our classroom as GREEN as possible.

What do I mean when I say GREEN?
It would be great if we could make minor changes in our everyday routines that would help our Earth.
I have listed a few links below that are geared towards creating a GREEN classroom.  I am encouraging students and parents to help out in any way possible!

For starters, I would prefer if students would start the year off with notebooks that they found at home.  Sometimes we dismiss an old notebook because we have written in a few pages - NOT HERE!  We welcome the left overs!  Bring them in and we can recover them if need be-

We can try to use recycled tissues and paper towels as much as possible.

Use recyclable water bottles...there is much debate about the safety of plastic water bottles.  That is why I LOVE my Sigg Water bottle - safest out there - it did cost about $20 but I have had mine for over two years now and I love it!  http://www.mysigg.com/

Check out these websites for more ideas - I can't do this all on my own!
