August 13, 2009
Dear
Student,
My name is Mrs. Ekstrom and I will be your teacher for
the 2009-2010 school year. I hope that
you have had a wonderful summer. We are
very close to beginning the new school year. School this year will begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.
I would like to take a few moments to tell you
a little about myself. This will be my eighth year teaching sixth grade at Whitin. I am teamed with the famous Mr. Raymond. He
teaches Language Arts and Social Studies and I teach Math and Science.
You may or may not be aware of my chronic knee problems. I have had a condition called Juvenile
Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of eleven. Over the past few years, I have
had several surgeries to help correct some of the complications that come with
the JRA, but they have been unsuccessful. This past year has been the most
difficult and painful. I have been
fortunate enough to work with a team of doctors at The New England Baptist
Hospital in Boston in hopes to put me on the path to recovery. This path is leading me to a total knee
replacement on August 28, 2009. I understand
that the timing of this surgery is inconvenient to the start of the school year
and it was a very difficult decision for me to make. But it is one that I must
make for my personal growth.
I have been informed from my doctor that I will be out of
school for approximately eight weeks. My
substitute will be Mrs. Andrea Consoletti. She and I have been working very hard this summer planning for the
beginning of the school year. I feel so
lucky to have her as my temporary replacement. Not only is she hard working and energetic, but her dedication to WhitinMiddle School is outstanding.
To
make this transition as easy as possible for you, Mrs. Consoletti and I have
arranged to be here on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 2 – 6 p.m. You are invited to come in with your parents to meet us and ask any
questions you may have. I hope to see
you there!
