This would be a great time to leave Kailyn a message. She is now in Tennessee, and will later move to Dallas, Texas! What would you like to say to her?

We have been discussing the many hardships the pilgrims faced so that they could live freely in America. We also discussed how the Native Americans helped the pilgrims to survive. We learned that thanks to Sarah Hale, each year in November, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving ~ my favorite holiday! For me, it is a time that I think about the many things I am thankful for ~ my family and friends, my students, and how lucky I am to have the freedom of choice. Tell me about the things you are thankful for.

It's been great to be back at school and following our routine. This morning, many of us noticed that there was lots of frost on the ground! The weather is changing and we are approaching a new season. We discussed how it can be pretty cold in the morning and then warmer in the afternoon. What other weather changes might take place in the next month?

    Hello my friends.
Mr. Flu has arrived at the McElligott household, and he is not a welcome guest! He barged right in and refused to leave, but we've been fighting back with lots of rest, liquids, and chicken soup!  Those are the things that make Mr. Flu weak, and I think it's beginning to work!

I'm not surprised to be getting very nice feedback from the substitutes! Thank you for being the respectful students that you are and helping the substitutes with our daily routine. I miss all of you and can't wait to be back!  You are the best!
     Love,
    Ms. McElligott :-)

It's really hard to believe that we are into the second week in November and the weather is this mild. I'm hoping my second-grade friends were able to get outside and enjoy it. There are still vibrant, colorful leaves on some of the trees, and it's a great time to start raking the ones that have fallen on the ground. Today, I took a break and used all of my senses to enjoy a nature walk through Breakheart Reservation.
    Tell me about your weekend.

We will be having a party on Friday. Some families celebrate Halloween. Others celebrate All Saints' Day, and others celebrate the Day of the Dead. Tell me how your family celebrates.  Use descriptive words!

The weather this weekend has been pretty chilly. I know it's October, but it feels like December! I've spent most of my time in classes learning about fantastic nonfiction literature. What have you been up to?

What a great time we had at the Melrose Public Library! Marianne Stanton is a fabulous librarian, and taught us many things about our library. She can't wait for you to visit again.  One of the books I just checked out is a picture book biography, A River of Words, The Story of William Carlos Williams. It is wonderful story of a boy who dreams of being a poet, but becomes a doctor. I will share this book with you so you can find out if William's dream came true.

Last week we learned about our neighborhood community and how some of our needs are met. This week we will talk about the location of places in our neighborhood and community. Why do you think we need maps? What are some places you might need directions for?

Our class has been busy observing living and non-living things in the school community.  We collected several types of leaves and some seed pods. We then classified our findings and used them to make beautiful leaf prints. Using our senses, we brainstormed nouns, verbs, adjectives, and phrases for our Cinquain poems. We will be completing those leaf poems tomorrow. Tell me what you think about living things.
