Yesterday we came back from Christmas Vacation.  My family went to Florida during Christmas Vacation.  I was kind of excited to come back.  Yesterday we started talking about bully stuff.  I learned that usually bullies pick on smaller kids.  Sometimes if you’re the one being bullied you get so mad at the person who is bullying you that you can turn into a bully.  Today in social studies we learned how to use Wordle.  We wrote 5 words that talked about what we had learned in social studies that day.  Each team gave our teacher their words and she typed them into Wordle.  Then the words turned into a picture. If people used the same word a lot then the word would be bigger in the picture.

P.S. If you want to make your own Wordle, go to the social studies tab on our home page. Scroll to the bottom and click on Wordle. It will take you right there!

Sorry that our blogging has been disbanded since January.  We are still working on many exciting things. In fact, life in 3rd grade has gotten so exciting and busy that the blog has taken a back seat to other projects.  We'll try to post in May again. No promises, but we'll do our best. :)  Mrs. Terborg
P.S. In the meantime, watch the Travelmates Voice Threads. It's amazing to see where our animals traveled this year. A total amount of miles traveled will be posted late May.

Today my teacher gave us a challenge for Haiti.  Mr. and Mrs. Terborg made 21 hygiene packs to donate in honor of our class since we have 21 kids.  Each pack has a towel, toothpaste, shampoo, toothbrush, comb, and a bar of soap.  Mrs. Terborg wants us to count how many people are in our family and then bring in that many things to honor our family.  I have 5 people in my family so I could bring in 5 bottles of shampoo or 5 towels.  I think toothpaste and toothbrush will be the most popular because the people haven't brushed their teeth in a long time.  I think I am going to bring in shampoo.

Today, we had a science game for our test tomorrow.  We played Space Jeopardy.  Some of the categories we could choose questions from were, “Help! I Can’t Breathe”, “It’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades”, and “Whee! Look at Me Float!”  Each team would pick a category and how much money they wanted to go for. Then, they had to answer the question that Mrs. Terborg asked them.  Our team had 1,700 points before final Jeopardy.  We risked 1,700 points and we were right!  Our team won.  The winning question was, “How hot is a sun spot?”  The answer was 7,000 degrees!

Yesterday, we played a Social Studies game because we had to review for the social studies test today.  We learned about Indians and how they fought with the French against the British.  We also learned that Indians trapped beaver for the French.  The French would give them glass beads for the beaver.  I know how the Indians got their name.  One explorer thought he was in India and he was in Michigan. He found some Indians bones and named them Indians because he thought he was in India.  I learned that from my sister.

Today we read a Martin Luther King Jr. book because it is his birthday today.  He is important because he was a person who believed that all people should have the same rights.  In math, we learned about two digit regrouping.  One of the problems I had gave me the answer and then I had to make up a problem that would give me that answer.  I also had to regroup twice in the problem.  It was a pretty good challenge.  By Eli

Today we had computers. We are doing something really funny in there.  We found a picture of this little girl. Mr. Stream, our computer teacher, is giving her a make-over.  He drew her eyes bigger.  He made her hair a lot different.  Chelsea found a picture of her brother and she drew all over him.  That's all!

Yesterday during science we learned about how we would be able to do things on the moon.  For example, we figured out how high we would be able to jump and how much we would be able to lift.  We figured out how high we could jump by stretching as far as we could go and putting a piece of tape on the wall. Then, we jumped and saw and how high we could put a second piece of tape on the wall.  Last, we measured the how far apart the pieces of tape were.  Then, we multiplied that number by 6 and we found how much we could jump on the moon.  The reason we chose 6 is because the gravity on the moon is 6 times less than gravity on the earth.  We also did a weight competition!  We had to sit in Mrs. Terborg's chair and hold onto the library crate which she filled with math books.  Each time we would lift the crate up and bend our elbow in.  We kept going until we couldn't lift anymore!  After we couldn't lift anymore, then we stood on a scale with the books.  Then we stood on it again without them and we saw how much we had lifted. Then, we multiplied this by 6 again.  I was the jumper for my team and Sydney was the lifter.  We had fun!

I was the leader last week Wednesday (Dec. 16) and Thursday (Dec. 17).  On Wednesday, our school had the Silver Tea.  It is for kids in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. Last year I was in it, but this year I was not.  My brother was in it and he just sang but he didn’t have a solo or duet.  This year I will be in the musical instead.  The musical happens in the spring time.  Right now in music we are practicing our songs for wassailing.  Wassailing is when you go Christmas caroling but you get to drink wassail.  It’s like hot apple cider.  We also learned a song in French.  It’s easy for me to sing.

P.S. Here is a picture of the angels we made in art. Each year we make another part of the nativity scene.  This angel is singing just like we will be doing.

Today was the day of the flour disaster!  J  The flour disaster was because we did an experiment for science.  We were learning how big craters can get on the moon.  First, we got a small marble and pan of flour.  We also had a yardstick that we stuck in the pan of flour. Then, we dropped a small marble from 25 cm.  We took the marble out and measured how big the crater was.  We also dropped the marble from 50 cm, 75 cm, and 100 cm.  Then we dropped a BIG marble from 100 cm.  This experiment taught that even something as small as a marble can make a really big dent.  I think you get a crater on the moon when something hits the moon. It could be a part of the rocket ship or the ashes from the back of the rocket ship.  I had a fun time with the flour because it was nice and squishy.  Brandon and I got messy! J  But we cleaned ourselves up and did not lose any checkbook money.
