My name is Samantha and I am a student at North Carolina State University as well as the Director of Outreach for a program called SATELLITE (Science and Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership in Tomorrow's Endeavors). This program is a five-day STEM outreach and leadership development program hosted at NC State for high school sophomores from rural and underserved communities in North Carolina. Students who attend SATELLITE participate in interactive labs, engaging conversations, and team building activities led by NC State faculty and undergraduate students. These activities are designed to generate interest in STEM fields, but also to educate and encourage students to think about a post-secondary education. Please keep reading for more details!
SATELLITE has been running at NC State for over twenty years. This year we are accepting 54 students from across North Carolina and we believe its going to be our best year yet! Because of our program's goals, we do not consider academic success while reviewing applicants. Rather, we are seeking students with the ability to maximize this experience; students who will really take advantage of the resources they will be exposed to while at NC State. This is where you come in. As a guidence counselor, you are in a position to help us identify the kind of students we are looking for and we are asking for your help to do so.
I understand this means more work for you in your already busy schedule, but all that we ask is for you to get the word out to your students about our program. How you want to do this is up to you. Whether its including it in the announcements, talking to students one on one, or forwarding this email to teachers, its up to you. I've also attached a flyer about our program you can print out and hang up around your school.
Our program this year runs from May 13th to 17th. Fortunately, these dates do not conflict with AP exams. The application requires two short letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and several short answer questions. The deadline to submit this application is March 10th at 11:45pm. Students will be notified of their admission status on April 1st. The program costs $30 to attend, but need based scholarships are available. For more detailed information you can visit our website: https://clubs.ncsu.edu/satellite/ and the application can be found here: https://thesciencehouse.wufoo.com/forms/zn4r9fk1cgahjm/.

To close, I would like to tell you that I personally attended this program in May 2013. It not only made me driven to get a post-secondary education, but it also opened my eyes to a world outside of the small, rural town I was living in. In May 2016, I was a counselor for the program and I continued to learn from it. This is a worthwhile program with a history of success, and I hope you can help us continue that tradition. Thank you for your time, and if you have any questions please feel free to email us!
