Hello!  I hope everyone is well.  Here are some key notes about our classroom:
Homework nightly- read and answer comprehension question- students are doing a nice job with this.  I will begin scaling back on the scaffolded written responses.  Students will be responsible for citing evidence with out a prompt from me in their response.
Students will also have math nightly- usually a practice page from GoMath!  Students also need to practice and have a parent sign Otter Creek. Students receive a grade if this is turned in and signed.  You are signing to show you have watched and timed your child for one minute with their math facts.  I cannot stress enough the importance of knowing their math facts as they get older.  As math becomes more complicated , students need to know automatically how to add, subtract, multiply and divide  1 digit numbers.  In essence, it's like trying to read for comprehension when your child spends the entire time trying to decode simple CVC words such as cat.  We want that piece to be automatic.
We will be finishing up our Rules and Laws unit in Social Studies and we will be doing a Science unit on simple machines.  Students will create simple machine Valentine boxes.  Please send in your "trash" to help with supplies (boxes, toilet paper holders , etc.)  If students do not finish their designs by the 10th- we will send them home to be completed.  Please work with your child on this if they need help.
Valentine celebration then will be a presentation of the machines, exchanging of Valentines and snacks.
Thank you for those who have sent in snacks.  I hope my note has clarified anything that was confusing about the snack process.
    Have a great week!
    Ann Marie

We have begun a unit on Expository Writing.  Please look for information to come home in the near future regarding a blended learning model that I will trial for the remainder of the year.

    • Otter Creek nightly.  Please time your child for a minute and initial pages.  If your child passes, they may not come home with that section to practice.
    • Spelling - I have changed to nightly spelling homework in the hopes that students will be more diligent with this piece of homework.
    • Reading- nightly 30 minutes.  If your child is behind- have them read an extra 15 minutes until caught up:)  Goal as of the end of the day is 226 steps.  Check out your child's log and see how they are doing in achieving their goal.

We will have a pancake breakfast this Friday , December 2nd.  Students should arrive at 8.  Please do not send your child earlier - they will need to go to before care if they arrive too early.  Likewise- your child will need to be in the classroom by 8:15 if they would like to enjoy our pancake breakfast.  I need to turn the griddle off by 8:20 or so in order to get ready for our day.  I know this is probably a huge hassle for those of you with little ones.  The kids really enjoy this time and I would encourage carpooling so that people do not have to make 2 trips to school.

Our Movie night, sponsored by the HEA,  will be on December 9 from 6-8.

Our Winter Concert is Thursday, December 15.  On December 16, students will have an early dismissal.

December 22 is an early dismissal and Winter Break is from December  23rd - January 2nd.  Classes resume January 3rd.
