Here is  the spot where we will post our blogs about the books we've read.  The first entry will be a model blog so that you can follow my lead  for your blogs.  Here goes:

Is death that much different than life?  In the novel, Elsewhere, by Gabrielle Zevin, fifteen year old Liz gets to find out the answer to that very question.   In this fantasy, Liz has been killed by a hit and and run driver and wakes up to find herself on a boat whose destination is a place called Elsewhere.  Liz find that life on earth is not that much different than life on Elsewhere.  There is, however, one huge difference - instead of people aging as they do on earth, aging happens in reverse.  People on Elsewhere get younger instead of older.  Eventually the inhabitants of Elsewhere end up as babies, get reborn and go back to earth to begin life again.

At first Liz is angry, finds it hard to adjust to life on Elsewhere and obsesses about her need to see her family again.  As time passes, Liz gets used to her new life, forms relationships with unexpected people and learns to find happiness.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly giving it a big, giant thumbs up.  On a scale of 1-5, I'd say this deserves a 4 and a half.  If you like books with a bit of a twist that make you really think, then you should absolutely consider paging your way through Elsewhere.

Well, we've all made it through the first day of sixth grade.  It was a great day for me, and I loved meeting all of you today.  I know we're going to have a wonderful year together.  Some of you may have noticed that I created a bulletin board in the front of the room which has the following quote on it, "Shoot for the moon.  Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."  While we will talk about this quote in school, if you would like to, please feel free to respond here with the following:  What do you think this quote means?  How could you apply this quote to real life?  What does this quote have to do with setting goals?  I look forward to hearing your answers.  Those people who post to the blog will get Scholar Dollars :)
