We are now a little more than half way through Book Two in the Warriors series.  So far, which book have you enjoyed most?  Why?  Explain your favorite part of that book.

We tried something new this week...instead of reading from your text book, we started the novel Frindle by Andrew Clements.  I love, love, love reading novels in class!  How do you like working with a book, rather than with our short stories in the text book?  I think you are doing a great job with Frindle, and I'd like to do another novel when we've finished.  What do you think?

This week, we started a new writing activity, the Children's Literature Project.  Tell me how you feel about this project.  What are your expectations?  Do you think it will be easy or difficult?  Are you excited about it?  You may also discuss who your partner is, what you're writing about, and how well you're working together.

    Here's your challenge...
Part 1:  Come up with the BEST sentence containing a compound subject or predicate!
Part 2:  Review the responses posted by your classmates.  Tell if they've made any mistakes and if you notice anything that could improve their sentences.  Did they include a compound subject, a compound predicate, or both?

Welcome back, boys and girls!  It's been a while since we've blogged together, so you should be ready for some serious writing.  :)

    Here is your task

    1.  Read the writing prompt.
    2.  Write a DETAILED response (2, 3, 5 sentences doesn't cut it!!  Show me some good writing!).
    3.  Proofread your work - spelling errors are driving me crazy!
    4.  Be sure that you've started your response with a compositional risk.

    Here's the prompt:

While playing on the playground at recess, you notice a small book in the snow.  Upon opening it, you find it's a Passport to the Impossible, allowing you to travel to a place that you could have never visited before.  Describe your destination and what you learn while you are there.

    Here is my final comment:

Whoo hoo!!  This prompt has POSSIBILITIES!!  I can't wait to see what you come up with!  Remember, DETAILED and WELL PROOFREAD responses...did I mention the need for creativity, too???  Impress me, dear ones.

Tell me which story you've enjoyed most this year, and be sure to give reasons to support your judgment.  Would you like to read a few novels together and take a break from the text book?  What kind of things do you like to read?

When you respond to the writing prompt below, keep in mind what I mentioned today in class - I AM LOOKING TO SEE MORE OF YOUR CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION!  This writing prompt has the potential for some fantastic responses.  Don't give me only two or three (or four or five!) sentences - put effort into your post.  Remember to check your spelling carefully.  Impress me with your creativity!

Pretend that you are given the power to change places with a fairy tale character.  Tell which character you would change places with and how you might change your part in the story.

This is an open blog, meaning you can discuss your ideas about anything we do - or you wish we would do - in language arts.  Tell me what you like, what you wish we did more of, even things you don't particularly enjoy.  You should comment at least one time before next Wednesday, but you can always add new thoughts to this topic throughout the school year.  I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!  :)

What does staying involved with baseball, even though she can't play, say about Tanya?

**I hope you recognized that this is an open-ended question!  Please think about the question, then "comment" your response to us.  When we all read your answer, we will be looking for the FOUR BIG REQUIREMENTS...be sure to include them!

Discuss your feelings about writing.  Is it something you enjoy doing, or is it a dreaded activity?  What are your reasons?  What do you think would make writing better/easier/more enjoyable for you?

You may use these questions to guide your writing, or you may discuss any other ideas you may have about the topic of writing.  Don't forget to respond to your classmates' blog posts, too...it would be great if we could share ideas that would help us to become better writers and make writing less of a chore.  :)  I can't wait to hear all of your thoughts!!
