Every year I teach dozens of students at the University of Birmingham. Most of the students on the gender and sexuality courses are women. I guess this is because the boys don't think that gender applies to them: that it's a subject for girls.

Do you agree or disagree with Ms. Brown's quote? Do you think only women care about gender?  Explain why in detail.

Possible questions to consider: How is your theme represented in the play?  What section (s) can it be applied to?  What statements are being made about characters, events, etc. because of your theme?  Are there any personal feelings you want to express as a result of your theme and the events of the play?

Walt Whitman considered himself a national poet- someone whose writings would address the most serious issues of the era including the divisions the United States faced that led to the Civil War.  Pick at least one serious issue you feel the United States is facing today.  Then, on your own, think of an artist- painter, writer, musician, actor, etc.- whom you believe is addressing one or more of these issues in a constructive way.  Explain why you chose that person and what he or she is doing for our country.

Read "The Dish on The Help" by Karen Valby and the embedded opinion article "The Truth About the Civil Rights Era" by Martha Southgate.  Although there have been several positive responses to the novel The Help, there have also been several negative responses.  What do you believe is the message readers should walk away with after reading The Help?  Do you agree or disagree with the negative responses to the novel?  Why or why not?

Read the packet starting with Kathleen Kent's "Letter to the Reader."  After reading The Heretic's Daughter, what do you believe is the major cause of the Salem Witch Trials?  Why?  Do your beliefs match that of the author?  Why or why not?
