Read to Feed
By: Emily Gronquist
Heifer International, a non profit organization, is once again having a program called Read to Feed. In this program students can raise money to give livestock to families around the world who need the animals most.
Students are asked to get sponsers that will either give them an amount of money all at once or, give them a certain amount of money for each minute or hour that they read. Students are encouraged to read as much as possible. By doing so they raise more money.
Some of the animals that are given to the families in need are:
Goats are a great animal to donate because of the dairy poducts that they can produce. They can thrive in extreme climates and on poor dry land by eating weeds, dry grass, and leaves. The cost to donate a goat is $120.
Bees are also a great animal to donate because of their ability to produce honey. You can eat and sell the honey that they make. You don’t even have to feed them. They eat wild flowers that you don’t even have to plant. To donate a hive of bees it costs $30.
Rabbits are another great animal to donate. Rabbits are very simple to raise. They just have to stay warm, dry, and be able to eatsimple foods such as carrot tops or vines and grasses. A trio of rabbits cost $60 to donate.
Chicks can be raised easily and when they grow up into hens they can lay up to 200 eggs a year which can be eaten and sold. Chicks can thrive on very little space and will readily on food scraps. To donate a flock of chicks while cost $20.
As you can see, most of these animals do not cost a lot of money to donate and all the students have to do is get sponsers and read as much as possible.
