Great first week of rehearsal!  I'm looking forward to seeing where we can go with "A Manger Suite" before Thanksgiving.  This weekend, remember a few things:

    1.  Check and provide me with an exact count of how many individuals (your parents, etc.) will be singing with us and what voice part, so I can give you the scores and CDs on Monday for them.

    2.  Continue to rehearse on your own.  (Your rehearsal tracks are on Blackboard and what we've done in class so far is listed on "Ensembles" here.)

    3.  Musical auditions are on Monday!  I'm getting excited.  Please let me know if you have any questions!

If you didn't have a chance to borrow a concert CD, remember I still have some available to take home and watch.

    Thanks for your hard work!

Rehearsal files for "A Manger Suite" are available on Blackboard for students to use for practice.  Students should login to Blackboard (http://blendedschools.blackboard.com/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp) and select either "Concert Choir" or "Chorale" (depending on their enrollment).  Find "Rehearsal Recordings" on the left and then navigate to the desired selection.  Tracks labeled with "VE" indicate Vocal Ensemble which is sometimes covered by members of Chorale.

Congratulations to both the Concert Choir and the Chorale on a wonderful first performance of the year at the Autumn Choral Concert!  I am proud of their work and am excited to see what is coming later this year.

We are working to post the concert video, and are working out some technical difficulties that are limiting our ability to fit the entire video on this site.  The problems should be worked out quickly and the video posted soon.  Thank you for your patience!

In the meantime, start thinking about the holidays!  We are beginning rehearsals of our holiday spectacular presentation, "A Manger Suite," featuring the combined forces of Concert Choir, Chorale, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Bradford music students, and community musicians. The piece will be featured on the Combined Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bradford Area High School Auditorium.

It is time for our Autumn Choral Concert.  This year we will feature both the Concert Choir, Chorale, and student soloists in selections that picture The Many Colors of Fall.

Because we have had some unforeseen interruptions with construction conflicts and athletic successes, we will be performing this concert at a different time.  The concert will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 9:45 am in the Bradford Area High School Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public for any parents, relatives, friends, and any community members that would like to attend.  Teachers in the school have been invited to bring their third period class to watch the students’ performance, if they like.  I understand that this schedule is not a traditional approach of the Music Department, but is necessary to honor the work of our singers and make it possible for all our students to perform together in our Auditorium.  If you are unable to attend the event, please watch the recorded concert on Mr. Young’s teacher website (www.bradfordareaschools.org/teacher_websites.cfm).

A schedule for the day is printed on the back of this letter.  Your student will need to have their attire with them on the morning of the performance.  They may wear their concert attire to school or change into it when they report to the Vocal Music Room at 9:00 am.  Students will warm up together, perform the concert, and then return to class.  Teachers have been notified of the concert plan, and students are responsible for making up all missed class work, so they should check with their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th period teachers to see what they will miss before Wednesday’s event.

Students should be reminded that every concert is a required, graded performance and their highest level of professionalism is expected.  Singers must have a current average of 80% or above to earn the opportunity to perform in this concert.  Their attire requirements are listed on the back. Please contact me if a student cannot be appropriately attired so that I may assist them in preparing for the concert.  Unnatural hair coloring, distracting perfumes, and any jewelry will not be permitted on the stage.

Attached are some important documents for you to review and return.  The Student Medical Form is required for students in all classes, as students will be regularly participating in events that occur outside the regular school day, such as concerts.  The Parent Information Page is also required to collect necessary information for the department.  Please complete the forms and return them with your student to me by Friday, October 28.

I am getting excited for the opening concert of the year.  I hope to see you on Wednesday, November 2 to hear The Many Colors of Fall!

There are many more exciting events planned for the year, but I don’t have room to tell you about all of them here.  I would like to invite you to a parent meeting on Tuesday, November 1 at 6:15 p.m. in the Vocal Music Room.  There you will learn more about fundraising opportunities for the year, our planned performance trip to Washington, D.C., and maybe something about the spring musical.  Please visit my teacher website to review the department calendar and stay on top of important updates.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.  Thank you again for your continued support of music in our schools!

Following the quietness of summer, it is certainly inspiring to return to the halls of BAHS and share in the energy—and music—of the students once again.  The musicians sound great already and I am excited to see where they’re going to go—and grow—this year!

This year the department is focusing on strengthening the ensembles and revamping our offerings to offer a stronger, more streamlined music curriculum.  We have removed Mixed Chorus and replaced it with Concert Choir, a higher-level ensemble that focuses on strengthening all the voices in the ensemble.  A new premier ensemble, The BAHS Chorale, is being offered for those students who have passed the rigorous audition and maintain the stringent course requirements.  Pullout lessons will be offered to all ensemble singers throughout the year.  We are seeing the return of many established singers along with many new faces from Fretz and upperclassmen.  Our concert lineups this year will include lots of different types of music, from the Renaissance to 21st Century, from madrigals to Glee.  We have planned several concerts throughout the year, each with a separate focus, that you’ll not want to miss!  I am also continuing our new voice curriculum, the Estill Voice Training method.  Many of our students were extremely successful last year discovering a voice they never knew they had, and we are excited to see those and other students grow in their singing abilities this year!  Miss Thumpston and I are also continuing to team-teach the very popular Guitar and Piano Classes.

Feel free to browse the website and notice the information located throughout.  There are some important documents for you to review and return.  The Student Medical Form is required for students in all classes, as students will be participating in events that occur outside the regular school day, such as concerts.  The Parent Information Page is also required to collect necessary information for the department.  Please complete the forms and return them to Mr. Young by Friday, September 9.  Thank you again for your continued support of music in our schools!
