A Million Little Pieces comment center

A Million Little Pieces presents some unusual formal innovations: Instead of using quotation marks, each piece of dialogue is set off on its own line with only occasional authorial indications of who is speaking; paragraphs are not indented; sentences sometimes run together without punctuation; and many passages read more like poetry than prose. How do these innovations affect the pace of the writing? How do they contribute to the book's rawness and immediacy? How is James Frey's unconventional style appropriate for this story?

2.12.09 Club News!

The Read'Em and Weep Book Club

met Thursday, February 12, 2009 during seventh period, in the library, to discuss their latest read, F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby. The book club members were torn in their opinions. Mrs. Jeffries, Miss Morris and Jeanette consider Gatsby fabulous.

"There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams- not through her own fault because of the colossal vitality of his illusion."

Members discussed dreams, perception, materialism, disallusionment as they related to the novel. Gatsby, himself, was voted as the favorite character.

Members discussed future picks and decided upon James Frey's, A Million Little Pieces. A permission slip was given to book club members due to the mature content of this novel.



The club has decided to honor the memory of Erin Schultz by donating one novel of each reading choice to the Mill Memorial Library in her name.

Members have decided to try an alternative to this Teacher Web Blog. Possibilities to be examined: Facebook and Wikispaces.

Read anything good lately?

Read 'Em & Weep

I was wondering if anyone read anything good over break? In addition to reading The Eyes of the Dragon, I also read Just After Sunset, a short story collection, also by Stephen King. I also read One More Day by Mitch Albom.

Just After Sunset had many great short stories. I particularly enjoyed "Willa" and "N." The Eyes of the Dragon was fabulous. I was excited to see characters I was familiar with from other King works.

I was slightly disappointed with Albom's piece. Although the characters were endearing, I felt as though it was predictable in places. It seemed as though Albom was caught up in giving us a "shocker" and gave up some of the novel's quality in exchange.

What about you constant reader?
