J2.Have you ever looked at an animal, or perhaps even a pet of your own, and wondered what it would say to you if it could talk? If you could talk to that animal, what would you ask it? How do you think it would answer?

J1. India Opal Buloni is the narrator of this novel, and we see everything from her point of view. If you were in her place, how would you have reacted to Winn-Dixie? Would you have fallen in love with him as easily? Explain.

J3. The preacher allowed Winn-Dixie to go to church and he caused quite an amusing scene. Explain how what happened surprised you. What would you normally expect to happen in a situation like this?

J5. Gloria and Opal plant a tree together in the garden. It is like they are planting a new friendship together. Think about one of your best friends. What have you done together to help your friendship grow?

J4. Miss Franny Block sighs and seems sad when she remembers that she’s all alone, because her friends are all gone. Imagine if your friends all went away. How would you feel? How would your life be different?

J6. In Chapter 11, Opal’s relationship with her father is deepening. This allows us to learn more about the preacher. Write down four things you know about the preacher.

J7. Have you ever known a person who always said, “If you do that, I’ll tell on you”? How did it make you feel? What did you do? Give details.

J9. If you could invent a special candy, what affect would it have on the people that tasted it? Why would you want them to feel this way? What would your candy taste like? How would you put that feeling into the candy?

J8. Gloria Dump says that each of us must learn what is the most important to us, by ourselves. If you had to write about what was most important to you, what would it be? Tell about what is most important to you.

J10. If you were planning a special party, what would be the reason for holding it? Who would you invite? What special activities would you have? What kind of food would you serve?
