    Happy Halloween!
Check out this link to the biggest pumpkins on record.  How many pounds do you think the record holding pumpkin could be?  Respond to this posting and you will be put into my drawing for an extra credit point!

Here is a link to learn more about the Hickory Horned Devil Catepillar that visited our classroom yesterday.  It was returned to its home to complete its life cycle!

Has anyone else noticed that as summer is winding down the spiders have been busier?  Each morning when I go outside there are numerous spider webs suspended between surfaces.  Some fill large expanses and are beautiful when embellished with dew.  Unfortunately, most people don't find the webs' creators as beautiful as their webs.

You may be noticing that spiders are moving in as the temperature declines.  We have a big, hair spider who has taken up residence in our basement.  Since spiders are helpful to the environment as they eat insects they are welcome in our house, or else we will scoop them up and place them outdoors. NEVER stomp on a spider.

Here is a picture of our visitor.              In doing research I found out that a mother wolf spider
It is a wolf spider.  They tend                carries her egg sac around with her.  When they hatch
to be shy and will scamper away           they ride around on her back as shown in this picture.
when they see you.                                Photo Source: http://www.spiderzrule.com/wolf.htm

Building webs in an innate behavior.  Each species has its characteristic  style of web.  Check out this link to see some photos.

Hi Everyone! I am going to use this page to talk about cool creatures and invite you to post here too!  Anything living--plant, animal, fungus, protist, bacteria--will be posted and discussed here, because, as I'll say in class numerous times over the year biology gets cool when you start seeing the world around you in a totally new way as you learn more and more biology.

    OK time for Critter #1!
