This week we find ourselves between topics. We are winding down on Segregation and will be moving into a discussion on Imperial America.  Rather than rehash an old debate I thought we could try a current topic this week and tackle the issue of privacy and school lockers.

Weekly Question:  Should schools have the right to search students' lockers?

Initial response due by Friday at Midnight.  Follow-ups due by Sunday at Midnight.

As we make our way through Chapter 16, a unit that contains arguably the most disturbing subject matter covered in 11th grade American Cultures Honors, a key question comes to mind.  What, if anything, should we do about atoning for the evil deeds of our forefathers with respect to African Americans?  Is there a way to make up for hundreds of years of slavery, segregation, and racial injustice?  Should we even try?

This Week's Blog assignment is to read the assigned readings on reparations and answer the following question:

Are descendants of slaves entitled to reparations?  Why or why not?

A chronic problem on the blogs is the failure of some posters to reference the reading materials in their responses.  Failing to provide information from the readings indicates that the student has not performed the required readings.  As part of our continuing effort at becoming college ready, students will begin losing points for not referencing the readings in their posts.  We are several months into the school year and all students should be aware of their responsibilities by now.  Let's try to show how much improvement we've demonstrated in our blogging skills by backing up our assertions with genuine facts from the readings.

Initial Blog entry due by Friday at 6:00 PM.  Follow-ups due by Sunday at midnight.

This week we return to the blog for a current topic.  National Health Care is a major issue in Congress and America right now.  What do you think?  Should all citizens pay for all Americans to have health care or do Americans bear individual responsibility in providing their own health care?  What factors are important in a decision like this?

Weekly question:  Should we have national health care?  Why or why not?

First Blog due by Thursday at Midnight.  Follow-ups due by Sunday at Midnight.  Use the readings to support your answer.  Blogging beyond the required three posts will improve your participation score.  Proper spelling, grammar, and usage required.

Many people discussed the ease and convenience of having everyone speak the same language.  They mentioned that Spanish speakers wouldn't lose their culture because they could always speak their language at home.  Those points were similar to another debate in America---School Uniforms.

This week's question---Should we have school uniforms?  Why or why not?

It will be interesting to see how many students change their beliefs this week once the "touchy" subject affects them instead of immigrants.  I suspect it to be a lively week on the boards.

    TIPS:
Use information from the articles to support your answer.

Have first entry completed by Friday at Midnight and follow-ups by Sunday at midnight.

Use proper spelling, grammar, and usage in all responses.

Argue your point vigorously but remember to be respectful of others.  You know the line.  Don't cross it.

In week 7 we return to the blog.  In keeping with our theme of blogging about current issues that have their roots in history I thought we could look at the English language in honor of Chapter 15 on Immigration.  Despite statistics that show that Hispanics are soon to become the largest minority group in America with approximately 30% of the U.S. population in the West and 15% of the total population overall, most polls show that a majority of Americans desire that English become the official language.  This is despite the fact that the U.S. has always been a nation of immigrants and has never had an official language before.

Thus, our question of the week:  Should English become our official language?  Why or why not?

Initial responses due by Friday at midnight.

Follow-up replies due by Sunday at midnight.

To receive full credit each essay must 1) use information from the readings to support argument, 2) be minimum 2-3 legitimate paragraphs in length, and 3) use proper spelling, grammar, and usage.

After a week off we return to the blog.  In keeping with the rise of technology and industry theme of chapter 14, we look at the current issue of filesharing.  The readings this week will focus on the pros and cons of downloading free music from the internet.  Informal polls last week indicated that 95% of high school students have done it at least once.

When writing our initial essay this week we will try to answer the following question: "IS DOWNLOADING MUSIC WRONG? WHY OR WHY NOT?

As we work on our initial essays as well as follow up responses students should be 1) utilizing information from the readings to make their case, 2) use additional outside materials if they wish (not required), and 3) continue using proper usage, format, grammar, and spelling.

Initial response due by Friday at Midnight.  Follow-up responses accepted until Sunday at Midnight.

This week we are beginning Chapter 14 which deals with the rise of industry in America. As we will discuss, one of the leading reasons for America’s industrial might was its wealth of natural resources. That is still true to some extent today. America is unique in the world for its abundant quantities of many different types of resources. However, use of resources comes at a price. This week we will discuss the merits of that by examining the issue of drilling for oil in the Arctic Refuge in Alaska.

In examining the required readings look for information that will help you answer the following question:

Should the U.S. allow oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge? Why or why not?

As we are developing our critical thinking skills, I want you to focus this week on using information from sources to prove your point. Full credit will be awarded to those students who utilize the readings in drafting their responses in addition to conforming to the required 2-3 paragraph initial post format and using proper grammar, spelling, and usage. Failure to cite specific examples from the readings in your posts will result in a lower grade.

Last week saw a marked (though not total) improvement in grammar and writing style. Remember to continue with that and be sure to write 2-3 paragraphs for your initial response.

To assist discussion I will now be adding the additional requirement of having ALL INITIAL POSTS BE DUE BY FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT. Follow-up posts will continue to be accepted until Sunday at Midnight. By having earlier initial posts, you and your classmates will have more options for discussion rather than waiting until Sunday for nearly half of the posts to appear

One of the biggest stories of 2009 was the Kids for Cash scandal in Luzerne County.  The story was carried in major national newspapers and was featured in major media outlets such as Time Magazine and CNN.  Imagine you are a judge that is hearing a case brought by the parents of the children. that were convicted and sentenced to Juvenile Detention.  They are arguing that the judges were corrupt and therefore their children should never have been sentenced to time in a correctional facility.  YOU HAVE FOUR (4) OPTIONS.  YOU MAY 1) DO NOTHING FOR THE CHILDREN, 2) AWARD THEM MONEY FOR THEIR TROUBLES, 3) RETRY THE CASES, 4) ERASE THE CRIMINAL RECORD OF ANY CHILD CONVICTED OF A CRIME IN LUZERNE COUNTY IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS.  Choose one and explain why it is the best solution.

    1) All students must have one (1) initial response in 2-3 paragraphs and two (2) follow-up responses to other posters.  Follow-ups should be at least one paragraph.

    2)  Reading to be completed by Friday.  Posting to be completed by Sunday at Midnight.

    3) Posting more than the required number of messages will be counted toward your participation grade.

****THIS WEEK STUDENTS SHOULD BE WORKING ON 1) USING INFORMATION FROM THE READINGS IN THEIR ESSAYS AND 2) WORKING ON PROPER SPELLING AND GRAMMAR IF THEY HAVEN"T YET.

Great start last week.  In general I am pleased with the initial effort.  Let's keep up the great work.

In 9th grade, you learned about Manifest Destiny and the desire by the U.S. to inhabit all of America from coast to coast.  You also learned that Native Americans lived in America long before the colonists arrived.  IMAGINE THAT IT IS YOUR JOB TO PROTECT SETTLERS TRYING TO MOVE WEST AGAINST INDIAN ATTACKS.  HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THE NATIVE AMERICAN PROBLEM?  Read Mr. Hizynski's assigned readings and use them to help you create an answer.  BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR NAME IN ALL RESPONSES.

****Your are required to submit a response by the due date AND RESPOND to all least one of your classmates.  All answers must be 2-3 paragraphs in length.  Responses to other classmates must be at least 5 sentences.

Why did you enroll in American Cultures 11 Honors instead of American Cultures or 11th grade A.P. history?  What do you hope to get out of this course?
