Read the article about Spain on pages 44-45 in your text. On my blog, write at least  five facts you learned about Spain to earn an extra point on the test. !Buena suerte!

I read this article about a custom in Bolivia. It reminds me in some ways of the El Día de los Muertos en Mexico. Check it out. Have you heard of any other customs like this in other parts of the world?

I've told you guys before how I love learning new languages and what a challenge that is. I thought some of you might find this following link to be fun. The Mi Vida Loca sections is a cool way to learn some new Spanish and it doesn't seem like work.

I'm using the French language lessons on the BBC site to polish up my Francais!

We have talked before about how learning is something you never stop doing. It lasts a lifetime. Well, I love studying and learning to speak other languages. I have been trying lately to learn enough Arabic to hold simple conversations with Arabic speakers I know. Why do I bring all this up. Remember how we learned last year that Arabic has had an influence on Spanish because the Moors ruled Spain for centuries? Also, remember that one of our strategies when we are reading, or listening to a conversation is to listen or look for cognates... if we see patterns and make connections it can help us in learning our target language.

Here are just a few words that we have in Spanish that came from Arabic
    aceite    azúcar   alcalde   almohada    alacrán

You already know one of these words from our vocabulary in class. Try looking up the others to find their English meanings.

Well, so many of us have been out with various illness, that it seems more of us are out than here sometimes. I appreciate how you guys have been taking care of your classmates by filling out the durante tu ausencia forms.  Thanks for your patience as we all work to get makeup work turned in and get prepared for those quzzes and tests we missed. You guys are awesome!! Keep up the good work as we move into Chapter 6A and talk about our homes, dream house, and items in the home. Of course we will have cultural readings and activities too. Don't forget that poem. We will begin working seriously on it in a week or so.

Well, we have started working on the new poem. This one is by Antonio Machado. We will try to spend a minute or two practicing it every day in class, but you must practice outside of class as well to learn it well. Thanks to all of you who sent in poems for consideration. For those of you who are interested the Baranquilla Group will meet on Thursday afternoons to discuss Spanish culture, literature, etc. Maybe we will see you there. Adios,

I was out running errands over the weekend and my wife was texting me about different things she wanted picked up, done, etc. I must admit I am not as into this as she is and at one point she got on to me for poor texting etiquette because I hadn't responded quickly enough. She told me it was rude to not text someone BRB if you were going to have a break in the coversation and so on. I started thinking about this and relating it to Spanish class. In many ways texting is its own language and many of you guys are very profficient in it because you do it all the time. You learned it through constant repetition. Other languages are the same way. You get better at them with consistent practice in conversation. Theses are just some thoughts I had on this. Learning a new language takes time but the more you practice the faster you progress. Look for every opportunity to use español in everyday life and you will see your skills improve. I will do the same with my texting.

    Buena suerte,

Bueno, nadie me ha dado unas sugerencias para poemas... es posible que necesito selecionar una poema. Respond with some suggestions for short poems in Spanish that we can work on this year. There's a great world poetry link to my website under the Links page. Also, remember that last year we discussed how Spanish is a Romance Language  and related to French, Portuguese, Italian... Well Spanish also has a strong influence from Arabic. I have started to study Arabic again and wanted to share some of the links Spanish has to Arabic with you guys as well as some cultural stuff.  Keep up with my blog and you will have access to some info. that may help you gain some bonus points on quizzes!

    Hasta luego,
