We have been learning that expert readers make connections from the text to themselves to better understand their reading.  We read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.

What text-to-self connection did you make?

It is here!  The shelves are stocked (well, they were) with school supplies ready for the upcoming year.  Call me a nerd, but I love school supply season.  In fact, I have been known to stalk Target stores waiting for the supplies to arrive on the shelves.  As a child, I can remember shopping for school supplies with my mom, and I loved it.  It felt so good to have the new list of supplies I would need for the upcoming year in my hands.  Smelling the scent of a newly opened box of crayons, and watching as my mom meticulously labeled each and every crayon KSB are among my favorite memories. This year I was thrilled and surprised to find that they make scented pencil boxes.  You could choose from bubble gum, strawberry, and grape.  Oh, such difficult decisions in life.  Why didn't they make that kind of stuff when I was in school??
So, as you can probably imagine, I will have a big smile on my face when I open my new package of Mr. Sketch markers and Papermate marker pens in assorted colors this year, and arrange them neatly on my desk.   It is here...School Supply Season.

This has been the summer of reading for me.  Since my last post, I finished Books three and four in the Septimus Heap series.  They were fantastic!  I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Book Five in September.  Here are some other books I have read this summer.  Have you read any of these books?  If so, let me know what you thought of them.  If not, check them out!

As always we headed to our beach vacation with books in tote.  One of the books my mom brought was Magyk, Book One in the Septimus Heap series. After I reread Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, she suggested I read it.  I devoured it in two days.  I was so addicted, we went to a local bookstore near the beach so that I could get the second book in the series (Flyte).  Today I started book three, Physik.  I highly recommend this series to any fantasy lovers out there.  The characters are intriguing and the world of magyk the author creates is fun to envision.  I am excited that Warner Brothers bought the rights to turn the first book into a movie.  I can't wait to see the characters come to life on screen.  Hopefully, it will be similar to what I have pictured in my head.  Production for the movie is set to start after Harry Potter is complete.  The fifth book, Syren, is coming out in September.  There will be a total of seven books in the series.  So, if this is making your reading tastebuds water, you should give it a taste.

I can't wait to read these new additions to Bogs & Noble.  Hopefully, these will be books that new Frog Bog members will enjoy.

Thank you Brenham and Miller for the gift card that made it happen.

In 3 days my family and I will be on the road to Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We are thrilled!!  Ocean Isle is a beach that I have been going to since I was a little baby.  I have so many memories from this beach.  I can't wait to make more memories this summer.

Here is a picture of Ocean Isle Beach at sunset.  Isn't it beautiful?

Last week, we talked about how reader's have reading tastebuds just like we have tastebuds that enjoy certain foods, we enjoy certain books. I told you that I had been thinking about my reading tastebuds.  I figured out that I am the kind of person that likes dog books.  This summer I did some reading research trying to find books to use for class read alouds.  I always picked dog books.  We will enjoy lots of books about dogs with each other this year.  I also figured out that I like to read books about how to become a better teacher.  I especially like to read books that help me learn to be a better reading teacher.  Another thing I learned about my reading tastebuds was that I have some favorite authors that I like to read.  I love Kevin Henkes' picture books.  I was put under a spell by J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.  I know I can always count on Lucy Calkins, Katie Wood Ray, and Kathy Collins to write books that will help me learn as much as I can about teaching well.
I hope that you have been thinking about your reading tastebuds and that you have learned a lot about yourself as a reader.  Please share your personal reading tastebud discoveries with me so that I can stock Bogs & Noble with books that will interest all of the readers in The Frog Bog.

When I was in first grade I was in Miss Felux's class.  We were Miss Felux's Frogs.  I loved her more than any teacher I have ever had.  During that year, I loved being one of her frogs so much that I have collected frogs ever since.  When it came time to decorate my very own classroom, there was no question about how to decorate it.  It was always going to be frogs, all because of her.
Over the years we have stayed in touch.  I was even a junior bridesmaid in her wedding.  This is a picture of Miss Felux (now Mrs. Fisher) and I from this summer.  For graduation she presented me with a huge bag filled with frog goodies.  Every time I see a frog I think of the teacher that made such a difference in my life.  I will always proudly be a member of Miss Felux's Frogs.

This is me in second grade. I loved frogs, playing with my friends, swimming, going to gymnastics class, and books. We had mailboxes in our classroom so we could write letters to each other. That was fun. My favorite food was roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. I started wearing glasses in second grade. I got most excited when my Nana came to visit.
