We planted radishes and lettuce in our garden early winter.  We have eagerly watched the seeds grow into large heads of lettuce and stalks of radishes.  Recently we harvested our garden and had a salad party.  The students had the opportunity to try lettuce and radish with ranch.  Each student will also bring home a plastic bag full of lettuce and radishes harvested from our garden.
This spring in another garden box we planted carrots, squash, watermelon, cateloupe, and onion seeds.  We will continue to watch our garden grow while learning about the plant life cycle, exploring insects, and measuring the plants as they grow.

Please keep reading your child's sight words every night.  Just email me if you need a copy of his or her current words.  Your child is also bringing home his or her reading books after we finish reading the book in class.  Please let your child read these books to you to show you what he or she has learned.  These take home readers can be kept at home.  Keep reading these with your child to help them become better readers.

Please remember to send your child in a jacket every day this winter.  We will go outside most days.  If your child is sick or you prefer for your child to stay inside for that day at recess then please just send me a note or an email.

Our classroom is also in need of kleenex tissues.  We have a lot of runny noses.  If possible, please send a box to school with your child.

The third grade students will be going on a field trip to see a play on 11/30.  Please remember to bring a sack lunch if you didn't request a sack lunch from the cafeteria.

Our class goes to the school library every Friday morning from 8:30 to 9:00am.  During this time our librarian, Mrs. Smith, reads us a story.  We then get to check out 2 library books.  Your child can either keep their library books in his or her desk for the week or may take them home.  Please send me an email if you would prefer the books to be kept just at school.  The student has to turn in the library books before checking out more.  You are also welcome to visit our library any day from 7:30 to 3:30 to check out books with your child.  The library is closed the week of 10/24- 10/28 for the book fair.  We will not check out books this Friday.  Mrs. Smith will still come to our classroom and read the students a book.

Mrs. Furnace is back from maternity leave.  Ms. Brown, Ms. Patty, and Mr. Ray did an excellent job of keeping the classroom running smoothly with fun learning activities.  I missed all my friends dearly.  I received many warm smiles and bear hugs from my friends.  This week we continued our insect unit.  Two of the favorite activities were the lady bug crafts and dancing with ribbons.  We worked on touch counting and communication with the craft.  We worked on following directions with the ribbon dancing.
Friday was field day.  My friends participated in every rotation including beach ball play, bouncy house jumping and sliding, water relay races, tug-a-war, jump rope games, jumping hurdles relay, tricycle relay, tattoo station, and the popsicle station. I was so proud that we were able to stay together, follow directions, and all have a great time.  I was impressed with the spontaneous requesting by color when we were choosing our popsicles.  All my friends have progressed and matured so much this school year.  Our last week will be full of fun with the dinosaur unit.

    Hello!

This week was my last week.  I want to thank you for all that you have done.  Thank you for all the gifts.  I will miss all the students.  I had a great last week.  Since tomorrow is my last day, I am going to bring snacks for the students for snack time.

This week was filled with BUGS!! We had a picnic in Pretend and Learn and the bugs wanted our food! The students learned songs about the butterfly cycle and baby bumble bee.  We read "Picnic Ants," "Little Ants," and "Beetle Bop."  The children loved it!  They learned what a scorpion is by playing with one in carpet and at circle time.

Work with your son/daughter on their names and other letters.  Point to letters while reading.

    I will miss you all.

    Dear Parents,

Last week we continued our ocean theme.  We watered our plants.  The students were able to play with the third graders all week.  They came in and joined us for circle time, snack time, read/aloud, and recess.  The children got very attached to the third graders and made great friends.  The time also impacted the third graders in a great and exciting way!  One student decided that he wants to be a special education teacher! Remember to read to your son/daughter and ask them questions about what they have read.

This week was busy and fun!  We had indoor recess Tuesday-Thursday and got to play at stations.  They loved the music station!  This week we talked about ocean animals.  We sang ocean animal songs and used the animal toys with the songs.  The children loved the cooking group.  We went "fishing" for "whales" with peanut butter, pretzels, and whale-gold fish.  We had the opportunity to see our plants growing outside!  We watered them and our third graders helped us this week.  We will still be observing and watering our plants next week!  They learned more about plants when we made a flower in arts and crafts.  We talked about the parts of the flower as we were gluing them on the paper.

    Thanks for the snacks!

At home when you read to your child, word on beginning and ending sounds.  Show them letters in the books and tell them the names of those letters.

Thank you for all you do!

    Kim
