Hey there Jollyville Parents, Students and Teachers. I am very excited to announce that we hosted our first NXT Robotics Club meeting this past Monday, September 19th. With a total of 17 fifth graders, we have the perfect size group to partner up and work on our problem solving skills through building and programming robots.

The goal of the robotics club is to give students the opportunity to collaborate and creatively solve real-world problems using fun and innovative technology. The NXT Robotics kits include a variety of moveable pieces, light, sound, touch and ultrasonic sensors and a programmable "brick" to be used as the body of the robot.

At our first meeting, we discussed our expectations and gave the students the chance to talk about what they already knew about robotics and what they hoped to accomplish during their ten week membership. We showed them some model robots that had been built over the summer and talked about the importance of perseverance and patience in problem solving.

To give the students an idea about what it feels like to program a robot, we took them online to play a game called Light-Bot. Light-Bot allows students to give directions to a virtual robot so that it will perform a simple task; walk in a predetermined path and light up blue squares. It seemed simple enough. As the robot is successful, the students move on to more complex levels where they eventually have to create repeating functions to insert into their program. Many of the students discovered that it was very important to frequently test their program as they added more and more steps.

Overall, it was a fun and successful meeting. Next week, students will receive their team assignments and start building a basic robot using directions included in the NXT kits. See below for some videos of our fifth graders programming and explaining their Light-Bots.

If you've never heard of the website www.wordle.net, you have to check it out. Wordle has a program that allows you to paste text into a box and it will create a "word cloud" of the text that you have inserted. The more frequently a word appears in your text, the larger it will be in your word cloud. See the example that I have below.
    Wordle: IT

There are lots of ways that you can use wordle with students. Here are just a few suggestions:

    1. Paste in a composition written by a student. Make sure that the option is selected to  "include common english words." Students can see if they have overused any words if they appear large in the word cloud.

    2. Have students paste in the definition from a vocabulary word. Have them show their word cloud to the class and have the other students guess what word is being defined based on what appears in the cloud.

    3. Have students write a poem or composition about themselves and let Wordle be the illustration.

If you have suggestions for other ways that teachers can use Wordle in the classroom, or would like to share an image, please email them to me.

I found an interesting editorial from The  International Society for Technology in Education. The author wonders whether technology, particularly increased connectivity, is dumbing us down, or making us smarter.

He says, "Forget the idea that technology decreases our natural ability to think, instead wrap your mind around the concept that it’s helping us to make more intricate connections and recognize increasingly elaborate patterns."

Welcome back faculty. I hope that everyone had a fantastic summer. I am so excited to be taking on the role of ITS at Jollyville Elementary. We can not ignore the fact that everyday, our world develops and integrates new technologies. Technology is a part of everything we do. In order to create an authentic learning experience in schools, we need to bring these resources to our students.

I believe that we should not include techology just for the sake of using it, but to bring the real world into the classroom and solve true life problems. This year, I will work to bring you lessons, resources and activities that you can use in your classroom to incorporate technology. It is my hope that this integration will be seamless and it will become a part of your teaching in the same way as other resources that you use daily.

The video below gives some interesting statistics to illustrate the exponential growth of technology in recent history.
