    Due on Friday, March 5th!

Think about the biography you just read. Name 2 character traits this person showed with examples from the text. How did this person influence or change the world? How would history be different if this person had not been born? Be specific in your answer.

Based on your reading over the last few days, do you think there should be zoos?

Your response should include the following:

    1.  A complete sentence that includes your opinion as to whether or not there should be zoos.
    2.  4-5 sentences supporting your opinion - you can use evidence from the reading passages.
    3.  Closing sentence that restates your opinion in a different way.
    4.  Include a title or heading.
    5.  Write in complete sentences.
    6.  Due by Friday.

** Must have at least 6 sentences for full credit!

    Have fun!

    Sample:
    There Should NOT be Zoos

I do not think that animals should be kept in zoos.  When animals are kept in zoos, they do not have the freedom to run around and enjoy their natural environment.  They cannot always participate in their natural behaviors and may forget how to hunt, find shelter, or just become too domesticated.  Some animal species are the only one in that particular zoo or enclosure.  They have no friends to keep them company or help them remember their regular behaviors.  When I have visited zoos, some animals seem like they are lonely, sad, or bored.  Keeping animals in zoos is not fair to the animals.  They should all be free.

Choose a section from the National Geographic Article, Sea Slugs, to read. There are 6 different sections.

After you read the section, you should summarize the section as follows:

    1. Include the Section Heading.
    2. Include the MAIN IDEA OF THE SECTION.  What is this section mostly about?
    3. Include 3-4 DETAILS THAT RELATE TO THE MAIN IDEA.  If the main idea is food, then give the details that support the idea of what food the animal eats, how it gets the food, etc.
    4.  Include 1 FASCINATING FACT and YOUR OPINION about what you read.
    5.  Include a A TEXT TO TEXT, TEXT TO SELF or TEXT TO WORLD CONNECTION.
    6.  Due by Friday.

Please post a response to the following by Friday, October 23rd.  You will receive a grade for this posting for both Reading and Writing.  You should use the SPELL CHECK OPTION (first icon at the top with the ABC and check mark) when you are finished.

First, write a summary of a book you have read this year using the Fab Five.  Include the title and author's name.  I suggest sticking to a fiction book this time.  Next time, you will discuss expository texts.

          • Who (the main character)
          • Wants What?
          • But (what gets in the way - the story's problem)
          • So (what does the character do to solve the problem)
          • Then (how does the problem get solved)

Don't give the ending away!  The summary should only be 5 sentences.

Second, rate the book on a scale of 1-5 and tell why.  Share 1 connection to the story.  Sign your name using Wrangler 1, 2, etc.  Here is a sample based on what we did in class.

Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism

    By Georgia Byng

Molly Moon is the main character in this story.  Molly really wants to be loved and accepted but her only friend got adopted and left the orphanage without saying goodbye. So in order to find Rocky, she uses hypnotism to get to New York.  Molly gets a message from Rocky and they get involved in a bank robbery. At the end of the story, they go back to the orphanage and  . . read the book to find out what happens!

I give this book a 5 star rating because it is funny and the characters have many adventures in New York City.  If you enjoy fantasy books, you might like this book.  One connection I have to the story is that when I was in elementary school, I would often wish that something exciting would happen to me that would change my life, like finding out I had a secret talent or magical powers, just like Molly (and Harry Potter, which is another connection!). I think that is why I am such a big fan of fantasy stories . . . they make you feel like you are part of another world.
