    WEDNESDAY APRIL 16, 2008
Our Junior National Young Leaders Conference has been filled with adventure and learning. It's hard to believe that tomorrow our students will return home!
Of course, we are keeping them busy right up to the final minute.
Throughout the day, Alex, Ashwin, Javier Exiquio, Esteban and Parker polished their newfound leadership skills with a presentation and discussion of their social projects. In the evening, they watched Shackleton's Antarctic Adventures, an IMAX movie about Sir Ernest Shackleton's trans-Antarctic journey. Our students will end the night with a sleepover at the Maryland Science Center.

This is exactly what you would call A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM!!!!!

Today our students investigated the the rich history of leadership in Washington, D.C. in a series of site explorations of some of the capital's most important historical sites. After a walking discovery of the seat of our country's legislative branch, Capitol Hill, the students explored the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Lincoln Memorial and stopped for a photo opportunity at the White House. They also visited the National Portrait Gallery, which houses nearly 20,000 works of art featuring men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development and culture of the United States.

At each of these sites, our students learned how leaders use their voices to take a stand and make a difference. In the evening, they worked with their LFG members to create a social organization to serve as their own "voice of change"
for a special topic that impacts local communities. This final project tasked the students with using their new leadership skills they have developed at JrNYLC this week.

Today our students traveled to Harpers Ferry, WV, located at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Now a national park, this beautiful area was the site of abolitionist John Brown's daring and ultimately unsuccessful raid on a federal armory in 1859. They, along with park rangers dressed in historical garb, engaged in a variety of simulations that mimicked life in America during the years leading up to the Civil War.
Alex, Ashwin, Javier Exiquio, Esteban & Parker manufactured fake bullets, scrubbed laundry, participated in military drills and learned some fun folk dances. They also examined Brown's life story and discussed his leadership characteristics. They studied the challenges he faced and then debated his actions.

    SUNDAY, APRIL 13, 2008
It has been a busy day for the guys! After breakfast, Alex, Ashwin, Javier Exiquio, Esteban, Parker and other students from all over the country, boarded the bus for a day trip to Philadelphia to study the events, leaders and values that led to the formation of the United States. Dividing their time between a guided walking exploration of the sites of Independence Mall and presentations and exhibits at the National Constitution Center, the students investigated the critical factors that led to the Declaration of Independence. In exploring this rich historical period, they focused on the ways in which the U.S. Constitution influences life in the United States--and how we, as citizens, influence the Constitution.

Returning to Washington, D.C. in the evening, the students convened with their LFGs to engage in a First Amendment simulation. This fictional scenario asked them to weigh the right of students to wear "peace patches" in school to advocate for increased community policing against the distraction that the patches would cause. Employing their communication skills, they staked out a position on the issue and debated and negotiated with their fellow scholars.

The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) helps scholars develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past and empowering them to make a positive impact in their community and the world.

Geared toward looking at leadership through a practical, everyday lens, JrNYLC incorporates a detailed examination of eight leadership traits and focuses on leaders in American history and social advocacy. Distinctive site experiences, hands-on exercises and workshops bring these concepts to life, while students work together to develop action plans that affect change within their home and communities.
