    Monday

Period 3 and 4 - These two class periods started learning about computer hardware. We talked about how IT (Information Technology) means any computer-based tool that is used by people to process information. The two main categories are Hardware and Software. Today we focused on hardware concepts and terminology.

    Tuesday

Period 5 - Hardware/Software review discussion followed by information on computer industry names for different interfaces. Students then began web research preparing for the Build Your Own Computer project.

Period 6 - Students worked on an assignment related to the article on computer.howstuffworks.com/motherboard.htm to help them better understand computer hardware.

Period 7 and 8 - These class periods are in sync with period 3 and 4 on Monday.

    Wednesday

Period 3 and 4 - Students learned about the "softer side of" IT...Software. We primarily focused on digital language and the students did an activity where they translated binary 0's and 1's into ASCII text.

    Thursday

Period 5 - Students received BYOC project rubric and worked on gathering the parts for their computers.

Period 6 - Students learned more about the parts inside the computer by doing an assignment for the computer.howstuffworks.com/inside-computer.htm article.

Period 7 and 8 - Company working day.

    Friday

There was a hiccup with software licensing this month so we were unable to use AutoCAD for about two weeks. Students spent additional time learning about multiview 2D drawings (the concept behind the drawings they will produce in AutoCAD) and other traditional drafting concepts.

High School credit for the class will not be a problem. Those students seeking Tech Prep college credit will need to work with me to ensure that all required drawings are completed for the ACC Portfolio by spring term final exams. I am currently in the process of verifying that our 14-month AutoCAD student licenses are still the same and I will be sending information home to download this soon.

October was a pretty interesting month. I picked up an additional class period and students had some schedule changes to fill the new class period and ease the overcrowding in other periods. Anticipation of this put off the forming of companies for a few weeks. Class periods also got out of sync on company formation due to many extracurricular events such as, field trips and pep rallies.

My new 5th period class (IIT-Academy) picked up an impressive array of Photoshop skills and are working on entries for the 2011 Edison Lecture Series Poster Contest and 2010-2011 RRISD Course Catalog Cover Contest. In the second half of October, this class period began learning about Computer Hardware and Software.

6th Period - This is a non-Academy version of IIT for students to earn Tech Apps graduation credit. This class was the first to start learning about Computer Hardware and Software. They also have the opportunity to participate in the designs contests mentioned for 5th period. This class has a wider variety of prior knowledge and current interest level. They are a pleasure because of the opportunity for me to come up with more creative ways to help them learn about computer and business topics.

7th Period - This is also a non-Academy section, however, this group of students often shares the same level of enthusiasm as my Academy sections and are fully involved in the whole process. 7th Period has formed companies and accepted design contracts to work on around other assignments. Company leaders were hired from their resumes and went through the process of interviewing and drafting (bidding) for their employees. Throughout October, they have created company names, logos, job titles, business cards, advertising, etc. The companies are computer graphic design oriented and have contributed to "contracts" for Edison Lecture Series, RRISD Course Catalog cover, and some poster designs for the school counselors.

8th Period - This an IIT-Academy section and has a highly active group of students in terms of extracurricular activities. This class period was a few days behind the other classes on company formation due to students participating in JROTC and other trips and activities. They are easily catching up to 7th period, though, and participating in the same activities.

3rd & 4th Period - 3rd period is Academy and 4th is non-Academy but both are amazing groups and have fully formed companies that started a week or two before 7th/8th period.

November... Companies work will slow down a lot during November for computer hardware/software and networking training.

    Hello and Welcome

I apologize for not keeping the news page updated. The previous format was cumbersome to maintain and during the second six weeks of this semester my class periods have become out of sync.

This blog will replace the News page. Please feel free to offer suggestions if there is information you would like included.
