Wow!  I feel like this school year is flying by so incredibly fast.  The students have learned so much and have really settled into being 3rd graders.  As our holiday break approaches, I wanted to pass on a few ideas.

**Please keep your child reading nightly over the break.  The public library is a great place to take them on a cold winter day.

**Don't forget about First In Math.  Your child can access the website on the 3rd grade links page.  It is www.firstinmath.com.  I will send home usernames and passwords over the break.  The public library has public access computers that can be used for this cool math activity.

**With new presents and toys coming in, please remember that 3rd grade will gladly accept your used toys for our Scholar Dollar Store.

This is a super opportunity to meet a great children's author!!!

Kate DiCamillo, author of The Magician’s Elephant, will sign speak and sign copies of her books at Barnes & Noble Round Rock on Friday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m. The store is located in the La Frontera Village at the intersection of IH-35 and SH-45.

In a highly awaited new novel, Kate DiCamillo conjures a haunting fable about trusting the unexpected and making the extraordinary come true. When a fortuneteller’s tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene know the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her? The fortuneteller’s mysterious answer sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that you will hardly dare to believe it’s true. With atmospheric illustrations by fine artist Yoko Tanaka, here is a dreamlike and captivating tale that could only be narrated by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo. In this timeless fable, she evokes the largest of themes-hope and belonging, desire and compassion-with the lightness of a magician’s touch.

Note: in order to get a book signed by Kate DiCamillo, you will need to have a ticket. Free ticket distribution on a first come, first served basis will begin at the store at 3:00 p.m. the day of the event. Kate DiCamillo will sign and personalize only ONE title per person and just sign up to two additional titles per person. She will not sign promo items, posters, autograph books, personal items, etc. Photos of the booksigning in progress will be allowed but there will be no posing or going behind the signing table.

All events are free and open to the public.

I guess after all these years, I have forgotten how exciting it is to learn cursive.  The kids were giddy with excitement as I passed out their cursive workbooks.  I love seeing the feeling they get from learning something that "adults" do.  Please encourage your child to practice cursive at home.  There is a letter formation page in their homework folders.

In math, we are learning about place value to the hundred thousands place.  This is something you can easily practice at home.  Have your child work on going from standard form (number form) to written form (word form) and vice versa.

    Have a great week!

Whew...we've made it through the first few days of school !!!  The kids are doing awesome and are working so hard.  We have been spending a good amount of time going over school wide and classroom expectations.  It is crucial that the children understand the purpose of our rules and that we must all follow them to ensure a successful learning environment for all.

Thursday folders are coming home today.  Please make sure you check your child's behavior chart and initial in the correct spot.  These folders need to be returned tomorrow (Friday).

    REMINDER...book orders are due tomorrow...August 28th.

Thank you parents for supporting your child's learning endeavors!

I cannot believe that the start of another year is right around the corner.  I am setting up the classroom, and it feels like the last day of school was just yesterday.  I hope all of you have had a super fun summer!  I have been very busy and haven't had much downtime.  My family and I moved into a new house, and that has been more work than I thought it would be.  I am going to the beach this weekend and can't wait to soak up some last minute rays on the sand.  See ya later!
