    Objectives:

    Create & Innovate: Create original products

    Communication & Collaboration: Communicate locally and globally; Create appropriately formatted written products

    Tech. Concepts & Conventions: Use appropriate terminology; Use appropriate tools and practices (like file management);

    Troubleshoot: Use a variety of input methods and proper keyboarding technique

    Procedure:

    1.    Introduce the idea of “drawing” with a word processor.

    2.    Show them examples of end products created with a word processing program like MS Word: Venn diagrams, maps, flow charts or timelines. Point out the use of font, size, color, and management of white space.

    3.    On the interactive whiteboard (IWB) display the Timeline template.

    4.    Demonstrate troubleshooting to:

    a.    View>Toolbar>Drawing and

    b.    Accidentally switching from Word to Finder

    5.    Demonstrate on the IWB how to select draw Text boxes and Basic shapes. Have several students repeat those steps to make similar changes to text.

    6.    Hands on independent practice:

    a.    The K & 1 students will draw using the program Tux Paint. Their drawing should contain at least 3 different basic shapes and at least two colors.

    b.    The 2nd & 3rd Grade students will open the “Drawing in Word” template on their, type their name, and then change, according to instructions on that document, the font size and colors, as well as correct spacing errors within sentences. They should create a simple diagram/map of their bedroom at home.

    7.    They will likely run out of time. Have them save their work early. They may complete this assignment next week if they don’t finish today. Steps 7a and 7b (below) are VERY important.

    a.    File > Save As

    b.    Insert the 6-digit student ID in front of the title “formatting fun

    c.    Change the “Save to” location from Desktop to Documents

    d.    Inspect each student’s screen before telling them to Click Save or OK

    e.    Have them click on the black apple in the top left corner of the desktop and then click “Log out students”.

    Assess: Saved documents

    2.    Show them examples of end products created with a word processing program like MS Word: labels, poems, letters, charts, and even diagrams. Point out the use of font, size, color, and management of white space.

    3.    On the interactive whiteboard (IWB) display the file formatting fun.dot template.

    4.    Demonstrate troubleshooting to: View>Formatting Palate or switch from Finder to Word

    5.    Demonstrate on the IWB how to select text and change the size and color of the font. Have several students repeat those steps to make similar changes to text.

    Objective: Digital Citizenship:

    • Behave safely and ethically online
    • Protect privacy
    • Understand the impact of negative online behaviors

    Procedure:

    1. Pose the question to students in a whole-group setting, , “What does it mean to be a good citizen?”
    2. Discuss answers and relate them to digital citizenship, as in “on-line”. We should respect each other, contribute to the common good, and protect yourself and others.
    3. Tell them that comments and pictures posted on the Internet can’t be “taken back” and may be seen by more than the person to whom you tried to send it. Ex: Gossip or mean words may be passed on to someone you didn’t intend to hurt.
    4. Show students the Netsmartz video online. http://www.netsmartzkids.org/LearnWithClicky/KnowTheRules
    5. Tell students you would like for them to critique a game on the site. Their mission is to play a game or two to see if it helps students learn review good safety tips.
    6.  Have students play the Online Safety game at that site.
    Assess: Ask students what tips might a student learn if they visited this site and played these games.

    Technology Lesson Plans Aug. 30-Sept. 7 Mr. Wyble 2

    Objective: Tech. Concepts & Conventions:

    • Use appropriate terminology

    • Troubleshoot
    • Use a variety of input methods

    Procedure:

    1.    Pose the question to students in a whole-group setting, , “Have you ever been lost or in a place where you just didn’t know your way around? How did you feel?”

    2.    Discuss answers and relate them to digital navigation. We should learn our way around a computer screen too. .

    3.    Tell them that comments and pictures posted on the Internet can’t be “taken back” and may be seen by more than the person to whom you tried to send it. Ex: Gossip or mean words may be passed on to someone you didn’t intend to hurt.

    4.    Show students the Navigation video I posted online. Navigation Video

    5.    Have several students repeat those steps to make similar movements on the IWB.

    6.    Hands on independent practice in the lab

    As the teacher instructs and observes, the students will:

    a.    Log on as a student

    b.    Open an application (Safari)

    c.    Move that window

    d.    Resize the window with the bottom right corner

    e.    Resize the window with the Yellow and Green button in the top left corner

    f.     Scroll up, down, left, and right with the slider bars and then with the mouse ball

    g.    Close the window with the Red button in the top left corner

    h.    Log off

    Objective: Classroom Citizenship

    • Create basic rules for the classroom and labs
    • Practice procedures and rules
    • Behave safely and ethically
    • Be respectful of people and property
    • Know teacher expectiations

    Procedure:

    1.    Set up a Flip camera to video students as they enter the room. Go greet them at the door. Tell them they can sit wherever they want. Hopefully you may catch some confusion and not chaos.

    2.    Pose the question to students in a whole-group setting, , “What does it mean to be a good citizen?”

    3.    Discuss answers and relate them to classroom citizenship. We should respect each other, contribute to the common good, and protect yourself and others.

    4.    Show students the video of their entrance. Did you conform? How did you feel not knowing what to do? What would happen if no one did?  What if we all did?

    5.    Come to an agreement that we all benefit from rules and expectations: relate to traffic laws, game rules & boundaries.

    6.    Tell students you would like for them to ask about MY expectations.

    7.    As a group, come up with “Ways to Be” in this class and lab. Put the ideas in a word document.

    Assess: Convert it to a word cloud. Print it. Have all the students sign it as a contract.
