Most Friendswood parents have a general understanding of first grade academic expectations. Often times, what isn't realized, is that teachers in the state of Texas are also required to implement the use of technology into the classroom. The state has outlined expectations for students in the form of additional TEKS. Students need to use technology to access, analyze, and evaluate required information. In addition to classroom practices, my plan was to help meet this expectation by creating and utilizing a classroom blog.
You may be wondering... Why a classroom blog?
I believe that this opportunity will allow students to have a voice and an audience for purposeful writing. Students will begin to understand that they don't have to be in school to learn. Technology that surrounds our students is overwhelming and ever-changing. Engaging in online communication is the future. Allowing students to blog is not only a powerful and purposeful communication method but it brings the "real world" to them.
What will this blog look like?
I will post questions for parents and students. Feedback is optional and student responses don't have to be error free. We'll learn the writing "have to's" in class. I want this opportunity to be non-threatening, inviting, and fun. Parents, please feel free to generate questions and communicate with other parents on this blog. No longer do you have to pull out your Westwood phone books to get your questions answered. Our blog can be a place for topics such as party information and homework help. Post a comment or ask a question and allow others to discuss online.
Will this blog be used for classroom purposes?
Throughout the year I will ask for information and hope that a community "expert" will respond. Please check back and if you are the "expert" or can add to our online learning please share. We'll use this information to further our understanding and better our class instruction.
How will information on the blog be monitored so my child only has access to appropriate information?
Prior to any postings, I am required to read and approve all information. Nothing will be posted without getting past me first!
Who can participate?
Anyone! The blog is designed for parents and students but communicating with our community will be a bonus. Won't it be fun when we receive information from experts abroad? Reading, writing, technology, and geography wrapped into one purposeful experience.
