The other night I walked into my 7th grade daughter's room as she was doing homework.  Music was blaring and she was sitting like a pretzel in a giant fuzzy bowl-shaped chair.  I wondered how anyone could get their work done sitting in that environment.  I was the opposite when I went to school -- I liked to sit at my desk with my desk lamp and I needed ultra-quiet.  I'm still like that -- it doesn't take much to distract me from my work.  And I have to prepare myself to get my homework done (yes, even teachers have homework!)  My favorite is going out for a run -- it clears my head and I think of all kinds of things we could do in class during this time.

So, how do you homework?  Where do you do it?  When do you do it?  Is it quiet or noisy?  Do you have a routine for getting ready to do your work?  Tell us about it.

As the new school year starts, I find myself spending more time at school than I do at my own house (excluding sleep time, of which I get little lately.)  I love my job, my classroom and my second family (that's you, students!) but I miss the comfort of my own home.  I especially miss my dog, Casper.  I wish I could bring him to school with me -- it would be great to see his smiling face all day, and I know he would brighten up the day of most people with whom he came in contact.  I also miss sitting on my front porch with a good book or my laptop.  And I miss being able to walk into my kitchen and get whatever I want out of the refrigerator (hmmm, maybe it's a good thing I'm not home!)

So what do you miss about being home for the summer?  Are you glad to be back at school?  If you could bring something from home to school with you, what would it be?

Believe it or not, even teachers get nervous before the first day of school.  I can remember the excitement of getting ready for the new school year when I was a kid, and I still get butterflies in my stomach thinking about what's to come.  But it's a good kind of nervous, the kind that keeps you alert and energized.  I have a feeling I won't sleep much tonight...I wonder how many of you will be burning the midnight oil with me?
