At sunset tonight the December holiday season will officially begin, as it’s the first night of Hanukkah. Only 14 more days until Christmas, and only 20 more days of 2009 left! Can you believe it? We are very busily working on various holiday projects, like I’m sure Santa’s elves are in the North Pole. Thank you to all of you who help these days go so smoothly with your help in and out of the classroom! And a special thanks to the four field trip drivers who were so understanding about our ticket mix-up! We had a great time at the play!

Gardening
We did it! We got our winter garden planted in the brief time between frosts and rain! We planted various kinds of lettuce, round globe carrots, snap peas and my favorite flowers, sweet peas! The kids were just great in both the planning and planting stages of the gardening process! We will be watching closely over the next week to see if we see any sprouts. We should definitely have some newborn plants showing themselves by the time we return in the new year! Maybe at our Valentine’s party, or Chinese New Year celebration we’ll get to have a little salad that we grew ourselves!
Does anybody happen to have any burlap? The carrot seed packet suggested it might help keep the soil around the carrots consistently moist. I know it’s not something people usually have lying around, but it can’t hurt to ask before I go buy some.
In late January or early February we will also need some sticks for our pea vines to climb, and some sort of climbing structure for our sweet peas as well, so if anyone has things stored in their garden sheds, that would be great, too.

Canned Food Drive
The district is holding a canned food drive to help out the community’s less fortunate citizens this holiday season. There is a large bin in the office for collecting donations. Thank you!
Don’t forget your canned foods!
