Independent Reading

Independent reading should be occurring on a nightly basis. I
require/request 30 minutes each night, though many scholars will read for
much longer. There is significant evidence to support how nightly reading
can increase the chances for success in the future.

Your scholar is aware of their Lexile range at this time. A Lexile range is
a value that harkens to a child’s instructional reading level. These books
will not be “ a piece of cake,” but rather, challenging enough to help them
grow as readers.
Please visit my Study Guides/Docs page for the weekly
contract.

In choosing appropriate books in regards to Lexile ranges, see
www.lexile.com, or click on its link in my “Link” section of this website.
Be aware, however, that not all books in a scholar’s range should
necessarily be read by them. Parents should help children to select books
that have appropriate content.
