Shabbat Shalom.
Yet another week has passed at Bet Sefer. We spent this week learning about
Noah and the Ark. We discussed that Noah didn't agree with the way people were
acting around him and he decided not to get involved with them. Noah was a
righteous man who "walked with God." The kids came up with examples of how
they could deal with a situation where they disagreed with what was going on
around them. For example: If they were hanging out with some friends who
started making fun of another classmate, what could they say or do that would
disagree with their friends without being mean. The class had some great
comments and ideas as usual.
We completed chapter 7 in our Hebrew text and the word of the week was
Tzedakah "justice." We broke into groups on Thursday and played Hebrew Hangman
with our vocab words, and the kids came up and read to me individually while
the games were going on. It was good!
Have a great weekend,
Yaira

Shabbat Shalom.
This week in Kitah Gimmel we continued to learn about the last of the Jewish
holidays of the season: Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The kids
made edible sukkot with graham crackers for walls, pretzels and parsley for
the roof and frosting for the mortar. It was messy but lots of yummy fun.
We talked about Shemini Atzeret and how we add in the line in the Amidah where
we ask and thank God for rain until Passover. In honor of this holiday we took
a field trip down to Lake Merritt and flew kites. It was a beautiful afternoon
and a great trip. Thanks to all the parents for helping out!
Best,
Yaira

Dear Kitah Gimmel Families,
The Jewish holiday fun continued this past week at Bet Sefer. We learned about
Sukkot, decorated a lulav and etrog stencil and did some fun activities with
Noah about what items we'd bring into the Sukkah.
We had a great music and tefillah (prayer) session with Rabbi Bloom and the
kids are getting used to the more advanced songs and are at the beginning
stages of grasping the evening prayer service.
In Hebrew we completed chapter 3 in our textbook and I sent home the practice
sheets with the students. We also did some extra worksheets that reinforce the
letters and words that the students are learning.
Hopefully you noticed a permission slip that went home with the students on
Tuesday, for our kite flying field trip to Lake Merritt in order to celebrate
Shemini Atzeret. Please be sure that these permission slips return to me by
Tuesday or at the latest Thursday so that all the students may attend the
field trip. If you never received the paperwork, I'm sure Susan Simon can
email you another copy. (You can always reply to this email and I can forward
it to Susan.) Thanks!
Shabbat Shalom,
Yaira

Shana Tova!
Wow, it was an active week.
We learned about Rosh HaShana on Tuesday. We began by making a list of what
the kids knew already and then focused on the new elements in our lesson. The
kids knew that we throw crumbs in the water and why, but didn't know it was
called "tashlich." We also reviewed the name of the Hebrew month "tishre" and
that Rosh HaShana translates to "head of the year." The Rabbi reinforced the
holiday fun with great songs during music.
On Thursday we started the session with a song about B'reisheit lead by Noah,
the assistant teacher. We continued on to study the Torah story about the
creation of the world and discussed how humans were created in the "image of
God" and what that means to us. We talked about how the acts of creation
continue everyday with births of babies, new construction sites and trees and
animals growing up. The class is very creative and a lot of great ideas came
out. We also had a great High Holiday prayer and shofar session with the
Rabbi...it was fantastic!
In Hebrew we went over SHIN, BET and TAV, and I sent the practice sheet home
w/ the kids. Everyone seems to be doing well thus far.
Just a few reminders:
Share A Shabbat date has been changed to 3/19 (yay!)
No snack provided at Bet Sefer starting the year of Kitah Gimmel so please
make sure the kids are well nourished before they arrive or send them with a
healthy snack of fruits, veggies or nuts that they can eat during break
There is no official supervision for kids before 3:50 so please be aware of
the time you are dropping kids off
Thanks so much and I look forward to an exciting year!
Shabbat Shalom and Shana Tova,
Yaira

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting year at Bet Sefer!
Thanks to those that attended the BBQ and meeting on Tuesday.
We had a lively day on Thursday:
Introductions and summer stories; reviewed some of our favorite things about
Hebrew school; discussed rules for the playground and classroom; decorated
kippot and had a nice music session with Rabbi Bloom and Kitah Dalet.
See you next week!
Shabbat Shalom,
Yaira
