What is Top Ten?
Top Ten is a fifth grade reading program that requires students
to read 10 books a trimester from 10 different genres. Each book
must be at least 100 pages. There are two exceptions to this
rule, non-fiction and biography. However, if the book is less
than 100 pages it needs to be approved by Mrs. McClure.
What are the genres for Top Ten?
Adventure, Animal, Award-winner, Biography, Contemporary
Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Non-fiction, and Free
Choice.
How do I make Top Ten?
In order to make Top Ten you must report ten books in ten
different genres. The first step is to read the book. The next
step is to fill out the Top Ten card, and turn it in to the
tray. Finally, a parent will come in for Top Ten reporting and
you will have to answer questions about the book.
What is, and how do I make, Top Ten Top Ten?
Each trimester I count the number of pages each student reads.
Then, I make a list of those that made Top Ten. I take that list
to the other fifth grade teachers and we determine who read the
most pages. The ten students who made Top Ten and read the most
pages are the fifth grade Top Ten Top Ten.
Do students have to write in cursive?
Yes and no. Single words may be done in print, but all sentences
must be in cursive. Final drafts must be in cursive or typed.
May I use the bathroom during class?
Yes. If it is 30 minutes before or after recess, you will owe 5
minutes during the next morning recess.
May I get a drink during class?
Yes, if it is an independent work time and you have not just
entered the room.
May I sharpen my pencil during class?
NO! Pencils need to be sharpened before school, at recess, at
lunch, or after school. The same policy applies to mechanical
pencils. Mechanical pencils need to be filled before school,
during recess or lunch, or after school. Pencil lead is not
allowed at your seat, it must stay in your backpack.
