Some think of teaching as a job; I regard it as a calling. For the last
eight years, it has been my privilege to teach at California Middle School.
Over this period, my classes have created a community built around the
humanities. Together we put on one Shakespearean play each year, visit the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival, raise money for charity, and produce ten issues
of the school paper, the Bystander. Within this community, students become
better readers, stronger writers, and more compassionate people. These
efforts have not gone unnoticed. I am SCUSD's 2005-2006 Teacher of the
Year. I have also been a KXTV 10 Teacher of the Month, been recognized by
the State Assembly, and had the honor of being Cal's Teacher of the Year in
2002.
Through the study of the humanities, my students will develop stronger, more
compassionate intellects. They will become astute essayists, active
debaters, passionate actors, and active minds. There are sets to build for
kinesthetic learners, lectures and noted for traditional learners, and high
standards for all.
