This is Ms. Holt's sixth year at Cal. She has also worked as a private
writing tutor and instructed "English 5P: Introduction to Writing Poetry"
while completing her Master of Arts degree in the Graduate English
Department at U.C. Davis. Prior to her studies at U.C. Davis, she received
her Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude, with Departmental Honors in English from
Middlebury College, in Vermont. And yes, she is married to the eighth grade
teacher Mr. Holt. They have a son, William, and live in Land Park.
Ms. Holt makes herself available to students needing extra help with
assignments before school between 7:30 and 8:00 am and regularly schedules
required lunchtime tutorials from 11:30 am to noon.
Ms. Holt loves reading and writing, and aims to give her students the tools
they need to develop a lifelong love of literature. She believes that words
are thoughts, and that as our vocabularies and methods for expressing
ourselves grow, so do our abilities to solve problems, think, and share our
experiences with others.
In the seventh grade, students focus on developing good study habits
as they work towards mastery of the California State Standards in Language
Arts. Their readings include a wide variety of genres, from short stories
and novels to plays and poems. In May, all of Ms. Holt's
students are invited to perform in the Sacramento Area Youth Speaks Poetry Slam.
