Welcome to Ms. Shen's Website! As of Monday, 4/2, the 4th Quarter officially started! It's your student's LAST quarter as a CONDOR! Amazing, isn’t it!! Most of 3rd quarter we were focused on the I-SEARCH, a research project that allowed students to learn and practice many of the skills necessary to write a successful research- based paper. We spent about 6 weeks on this project, and most students worked very hard! Hopefully, they will now be ready for these types of projects in high school. Some students struggled to complete all their Independent Reading Pages Requirement this Quarter, perhaps because they were focused on researching for I-Search (and didn't count those pages as reading!). Here are the results for 3rd Quarter: Period 2 - 66% completed all of the required pages. Period 3 - 62% completed all of the required pages. Period 5 - 68% completed all of the required pages. Period 6 - 77% completed all of the required pages. We'd like to end the year strong, so please encourage your student to READ, READ, READ (22-33 pages/5 nights a week) and get those forms filled out and turned in for 4th Quarter! We also read some short stories and we reviewed Analytical Essays (Response to Literature), a very important type of writing that is required throughout high school and college. In 4th Quarter, we will be working on Poetry and practicing another Analytical Essay. We are continually preparing for the STAR test in May, and we will also be reading one more class novel, Hinton’s The Outsiders. This tends to be a time of year when students start feeling a little 8th grade-itis, so please continue to encourage your student to do his/her best and get assignments done and turned in on time. Remind him/her to READ, READ, READ (22-33 pages/5 nights a week) and get those forms filled out and turned in for 4th Quarter! We want all students to stay strong and finish their last year at Canyon on a positive note! Thanks to all for your continued support, and I look forward to one more great quarter! ************************************************************************** 8th graders and parents/guardians - this website is for you! You can even print out Independent Reading Forms or find some great links to lists of recommended reading to get your required pages! My schedule is also available if you need to reach me. Grades are updated regularly and will be sent to you through email about every 2 weeks. Please contact me if you are interested in receiving these updates. If you have any questions or problems, please email me at kshen@cv.k12.ca.us. If you have any great books to add to the Recommended Reading List, please e-mail me with the title, author, and a 1-sentence summary of the plot. If you thought a book was great, other people may enjoy reading it too! I'm looking forward to a great year! Thanks!
